From experience they're not positioned on the entrance/exit forcing you to pass through. At least not where I work. I guess smaller stations could differ. It's a persons right, even if not everybody likes it, not to walk through one, therefore you can't deny travel for this reason. Also, setting the sensor off isn't grounds for a search alone....another reason they're a tad pointless.

They're often deployed in football stadia or high schools, where entry will be denied to anyone refusing to go through the detector. I don't know why it's done differently on the railway, the voluntary approach doesn't sound like it has much benefit

I can see them being of benefit for football, and other events. Schools too (unfortunately....). Also good for airports and courts too. I recon it has something to do with human rights. Stab in the dark that one....

On the basis this is about metal arches its easy to control a crowd of 80,000 into a football stadium or 1200 school pupils but try to push 30,000 (or more and probably many many more at the likes of Waterloo) through metal arches upon arrival / departure at Paddington during every peak hour that could cause a safety risk never mind create a capacity crunch on the platforms and concourse. Also trains would have to be advertised significantly earlier on departure screens nevermind the removal of belts, watches, keys that would set off a metal arch and then the repatriation of said items. Just see the hassle and fuss at airports to see what I mean.

Additionally what would be next? liquid ban just to prevent one nutter who may be carrying acid.
