Thanks for that - In Scotland they seem very thin on the ground or non-existent in the South of Scotland, West of Glasgow and North of Inverness.

What happens if they get a shout in Thurso - unlikely I know. Try getting someone up from Inverness in a hurry - forget a train they'd need a helicopter

Whether the BTP patrol on trains outside of times when football and events are on is largely dependent on resources and workload. If PCs are riding on a train somewhere, they're unable to respond to incidents quickly (the priority) or complete paperwork (which is necessary to get crimes investigated and people into court/convicted). There are also other priorities that would normally be considered more important or a better use of time than train patrols.

In some areas there will be more train patrols due to some PCs and (mainly) PCSOs being assigned to a Neighbourhood Policing Team and/or Safer Travel Team.

Do BTP have any remit on Bus services ?

No, but if BTP fell over something happening on a bus, they'd get involved.

In most places BTP would take the person they'd arrested to a local police station with a custody block. There aren't that many BTP stations with their own still functioning cells, especially not outside London. They're not really handed over to the locals either as such, as they're still the BTP's prisoner.

It depends who is where and how urgent the matter is, but I'd assume that the local 'locals' up there would be called.

Custody suits are rather expensive to have manned without using them all the time, so I suspect thats right that BTP only have them in London.

I'm sure when I rang North Yorkshire Police the other day the IVR said:
Press 1 to speak to the control room
Press 2 to report a crime
Press 3 to book a place in a custody suit

Presumably BTP, Civil Nuclear, MoD, UKBA, SOCA and so on are in the same boat when it comes to using local custody suits.

Seen 'em on c2c (which contrary to popular opinion, is really not some anarchic criminal festering hellhole) a few times, and the tube, and on FGW local Thames Valley Services in Berkshire/Oxon....essentially on all the lines I use most frequently, in fact.

AS for bus inspections (if not bus inspectors), once I was on a bus which was pulled over, the driver arrested and everyone thrown off the bus! Something to do with the bus not meeting safety regulations or having an appropriate license or something I think.

(This was in the early days of London Transport routes being put out to tender, and the operating company was a small independent company that generally had, and generally deserved - in sharp contrast to most of the private operators that operated TfL routes then or since, an exemplary reputation, so it was a little incongruous)

I've see LUL RPIs on the tube - on numerous occasions on trains at Barking, as well as elsewhere. Admittedly not for some years, and possibly not since Oyster has been in existence either....

I saw a London Buses RPI last night on the 2 in between Lambeth and Stockwell. It seemed a bit dangerous to have him out on his own without backup. He gave the driver a series of instructions to put in to his ticket machine and then asked if there were any problems. The driver mumbled back and the inspectors asked again in a much more stern tone.

I've seen LUL inspections as well. If anyone is familiar with the curved corridor from the escalators from the Northern Line at Bank to the D&C line at Monument; they did a big check there in the past six months. I have also seen a mobile check. A massively overweight man with a badge in a holder like an American detective's shield. He had confiscated someone's oyster and given them a report to enable them to get out at the end.

Most of them are in London, not all though. There are a few outside of London, with another one opening in the next couple of years, apparently.

I had four sat next to me on a London Midland service last week from Marston Green to Coventry, carrying out ticketing checks with the revenue protection team...had a nice chat with them although had a few looks off other passengers
