Where is the last place you expect to see a BTP officer on patrol on a train.

Yes folks happened yesterday on the 0907 from Falkirk to Stirling- don't know if he was just hitching a lift but he was still onboard when I got off at Stirling.

This is the first time I have ever seen this apart from on "Football Specials" in the old days.

Has anyone else experienced BTP onboard on patrol recently

Incidentally am I getting older or are the coppers getting shorter.... he must have been all of Five Foot Five. Gosh remember City of London Six Foot requirement in the old days

BTP are always on trains....

You see them frequently on the Tube. They also ride around the Cross City line quite a bit.

It's nothing unusual!

I've seen BTP ride from York to Northallerton and back on more than one occasion...must kill the time for them

That may be the case in London but not in the sticks up here outside of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen

I see them all the time on my travels, yet strangely they always prefer to stay in their office rather than man trains when they may be needed, ie. after football matches or protests!

I see them a fair amount of the times on the Cross City. Presumably hitching a ride to town since it's rarer for them to be heading towards Four Oaks

I've never seen a police officer or even a PSCO on my local line. I have occasionally seen them on other lines around here (mainly during the day when everything is as normal!). They are usually polite and don't take up seats.

I see them on stations much more than on trains.

I see plenty of Southeastern employed REO's milling around the metro stations but feel lucky to see a BTP officer more than once in a twelve month period on the line.

Just out of interest, what powers do Railway Enforcement Officers have?

No, they are employed by the TOC themselves. Plastic policemen is what I call them as they can't do much!

I see them doing ticket checks every now and then but short of that I'm not sure what they're purpose is.
If they are for reducing crime on the railway does that mean they have the power to detain? (in order for a real bobby to come and nick them)

No more than any other person, they can do a citizens arrest!

Yes they can check tickets, but they can't sell them, our SWT REO's only have a UPFN pad, I've heard they can do MG11 reports for prosecution too.

Wouldn't they be more useful if they were given similar powers as commercial security guards where they have the power to detain if the believe an offence has taken place.

Maybe its a cost thing (I'm sure some sort of insurance would be required if they were given the right to detain)

Funny you should mention that but I have noticed BTP Offices in Dundee, Stirling, Edinburgh etc recently but never seen anyone going in or out of them. :roll:

Onboard they are as rare as another fabled entity "Bus Inspectors" - from my experience anyway.

the one creature that is a myth is the LUL RPI. In all my years in traveling on the tube, I have never seen one.
My friend insists that he was stopped by one in plain clothes before but I tell him he was probably drunk!

Seen 'em on c2c (which contrary to popular opinion, is really not some anarchic criminal festering hellhole) a few times, and the tube, and on FGW local Thames Valley Services in Berkshire/Oxon....essentially on all the lines I use most frequently, in fact.

AS for bus inspections (if not bus inspectors), once I was on a bus which was pulled over, the driver arrested and everyone thrown off the bus! Something to do with the bus not meeting safety regulations or having an appropriate license or something I think.

(This was in the early days of London Transport routes being put out to tender, and the operating company was a small independent company that generally had, and generally deserved - in sharp contrast to most of the private operators that operated TfL routes then or since, an exemplary reputation, so it was a little incongruous)

I've see LUL RPIs on the tube - on numerous occasions on trains at Barking, as well as elsewhere. Admittedly not for some years, and possibly not since Oyster has been in existence either....

I have never seen one on First Bus in the Falkirk/Stirling/Edinburgh areas - I asked a driver who said they do exist but spend most of their time zipping about in First Vans spying on Drivers

Do BTP have any remit on Bus services ?

BTP PCSOs do have the power to detain for a certain period until a Police Officer arrives to take over, for which reason they are also issued with handcuffs.

I saw a couple of BTP officers last year on a train from Marylebone to Banbury. They seemed to be escorting an elderly gentlemen, who was met by someone else when they got off the train - he may have just been chatting to them.

I also reported a drunk, who was trying to kick his way onto a stranded 142, to station staff at Lincoln during the snow in December 2010 and he was subsequently removed from the station and ticketed by BTP officers.
