Bromborough Rake to York

I'll be in the UK over August (on holiday from Australia). One of the things I have planned is to go over to National Railway Museum for the day, I plan on getting a North West 4 in 8 day Rover (I did last time I was in the UK in 2012) and a 16-25 railcard (I'm applying online before I go over, easier for me). My question is could I use the rover as far as Leeds (I looked at the validity map already and I know I can) and then just pay for the Leeds - York portion with a return ticket whilst staying on the same train (IE purchasing from the ticket office at Liverpool Lime St or the guard) or will I have to leave the train and buy a ticket in Leeds station.

Yes. Buy from the ticket office before departure.

I guess a BritRail is too expensive for your needs? Are you flying into Heathrow?

I'm flying into Manchester via Dubai (first experience in an A380 all the way from Sydney!) I am staying with family who live 5 minutes from Bromborough rake station, so that cuts down costs for accommodation and I have them picking me up at Manchester too. I like using rovers when I travel because I know my way around pretty well. So would I be able to get a Leeds - York return from Bromborough or Liverpool Lime Street, I plan catching a train about 8.00am in Liverpool and back from york about 15.00pm

There is no reason why Bromborough Rake or Liverpool Lime Street ticket offices would not be able to issue a Leeds - York return. Just make sure you know which fare it is you want! :)
