Ta,

If I was running SWT, and I was getting this kind of feedback, I think I'd run some scenario training with WICC staff trying to deal with a simulated issue or set of issues and drivers and guards at the end of comms lines acting the parts of of drivers and guards stuck in different places, with a feedback section at the end so the frontline staff can ask why control made this decision instead of that decision.

More fun would be having the drivers and conductors who think they know it all acting the parts of the WICC staff. See what a hash they make of it.

Your last sentence should be applied equally to the Wicc.

Yes, there is pressure on them to sort the service out,but they need to understand that drivers and guards have to work to set rules and they often have hundreds of passengers putting pressure on 1 guard and 1 driver for answers NOW and there is silence from the WICC. They need to walk in the shoes of traincrew in serious disruption.

Additionally, is the attitude of a cohort of people working in the WICC (not all) who think only they have every solution to every problem and go la la la and put their fingers in ears when train crew make constructive suggestions to get passengers moving. Unfortunately, there are also a few staff in the WICC who are downright rude, arrogant and aggressive when speaking to traincrew.

So, sure defend the WICC if you want, but don't take a holier than thou attitude that they are perfect.

I never said WICC staff are perfect.

But to generalise the whole team like some people do on this board is exceptionally rude and ungrateful.

It's the railway way with various grades always slagging other grades off whilst being largely ignorant of much of the detail of the other job... Look at the other rants 455driver/HarleyDavidson has about others, then he's the first to slag off people asking questions or making suggestions

On the whole it all boils down to a lack of communication. One night last week within the space of about five minutes my train was delayed, then running empty to it's destination and then reinstated, me and my driver were furious afterwards because we had left passengers behind and run empty for three stops in the middle of rush hour and many of those passengers had almost an hour to wait for their next service.

I know a number of people in the WICC and they are good people, but when things go wrong I wonder if it would not be better to still have some degree of local control from train crew supervisors as in years gone by.

And not only are there not so many of them now, their responsibility has changed considerably.
However, there also used to be Station Supervisors many years ago too, they were like 'Gods' on the station, who either helped you out or made life difficult!

You can only work on the information you are told....
And if NR tell SWT that nothing will move for an hour, then you make decisions based on that, because before you know it, if you don't, you can have a queue of trains trapped.
It's often a no-win situation for the TOC.

Will be interesting to see what happens this evening then.....
Trespass incident at Mt Pleasant Crossing and the juice has been off on all lines for 90 minutes now...
Waiting for a negotiator to site!

And who have I slagged off other than WICC, which I'm not exactly alone in doing.

If you leave yourself open to criticism for make crass decisions or statements then you can expect someone to take advantage of it whether you or anyone else likes it or not.

Please let's not get all super sensitive, after all it's a big bad world out there and if you can't accept the odd bloody nose (not that I'm offering you one!), then perhaps you should go back under the covers.

I've been censured more than a few times, some of them have been quite rightly justified, quite a few not, IMHO, by what I and several others have seen as over zealous moderation, however that's not up for discussion.

I would put half the drivers/guards in the WICC and half acting the part of stuck drivers/guards, possibly swapping over with each other for a second session, you could even have the same outward issue, with a critical difference. e.g. a key driver with different route knowledge.

The whole point of doing this would be:

WICC staff get to see what frontline staff would do to ease issues.
Frontline staff get an appreciation of issues faced by WICC staff.
The idea isn't to give a platform for people to fail, but to improve understanding on both sides.
