Brockenhurst

Planning travelling Southampton to Waterloo. Won't be in any hurry, so it would be cheaper for me to travel to Brockenhurst, then use an advance ticket from there to Waterloo. Haven't considered connection timings yet, but does anyone know if there are any decent cafes or pubs in vicinity of Brockenhurst station, in case I need to hang around a while?

Maybe consider Megatrain direct from Southampton to Waterloo?

Thanks for that Keithp. hadn't thought of that. Journey, probably in May, not available yet. but will keep an eye on it.

Not sure if it help's but have you considered using Southern? The journey takes an extra hour but is almost half price. I recently saw a Advance from Southampton to Victoria for a whopping £2.45 (with Y-P railcard) and that was only a week in advance.

It cost's me £17.80ish for a Super Off Peak Day Return from SOU - WAT. But only cost's me £9.90 to VIC. And if you book online with Southern it goes down to £8.90.

I was going to suggest using Southern from Southampton as well, as for pubs/ cafes Brock is only a village but I find the Foresters Arms quite good if you don't mind students or lots of walkers in the summer you can't miss it if heading into the village, no cafes unless you walk into the village centre 10mins or there is a shop on the station selling tea/ coffee.

Thanks for advice re Southern, again hadn't thought of that. Not in a hurry, so don't mind longer journey, presently showing 3.70 advance ticket for May -looks good

The downside with using advance/Southern Only tickets is Southern have a record of cancelling all their trains to Southampton at the drop of a hat, so you could end up stuck at Fareham or Havant!

In that situation would Southern have any obligation to get me back to London?

If there were no more Southern trains then I assume they would have to let you use SWT.

Not sure why you want to start from Brock ?. Pubs,Foresters & a Pint or 2 0f Ringwood 49er, Snankcatcher a bit up market but ok if you like £3.60 a pint & fanncy nuts free with your pint, Rose & Crown 200 yards down from the Snakcatcher,ok pub. The best Pub shut 5 years ago, The Morant Arms, Ideal for train spotting & drinking ale, right next to the gates.
