British rail classes

I don't know if this is a BVE question or a "real train" question.
I have quick launch icons for BVE2 and BVE4. Before I download anything, I usually check my 2 folders to see if it is something new to download, or something I already have.
In both my train folders I have the following examples:

314 passenger view
37091
BR112
BR_Class37-41
cd181_nak
cl59
class 31

I have looked on wiki at the British rail classes, and there are not this many ways to identify a train.
Why are there so many different name structures?
Can I change all the file names to look alike?
Such as naming everything "class xyz"?.

I know that if I change the names of the folders, then I would have to edit a lot of csv files.
This would be a lot of trouble just to satisfy my large lack of understanding of British and European trains just to make them look the way that I want them to look.

I don't intend for this to be a major issue, just curiosity.

The name of a train folder in BVE is up to the author, so he/she can choose what they call their train. This could be any variation of the actual name/classification of the real thing. All trains in this country (except London Underground, trams, track tampers/MPVs and steam locos etc) are classified under TOPS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOPS), and are classified from Class 01 to Class 508. There are not 508 different classes of trains though, some numbers are missing, just to complicate things!

Older trains (ie: before TOPS was introduced) are classified with a 'D' or 'E' number instead (however, these train are also catered for under the newer TOPS system). For example, 55022 is a Deltic, and is a Class 55, however pre-TOPs it was classified with a 'D' number, D9000.

Skydo, I know exactly where you're coming from as I thought exactly the same. In a bid to standardise things and see at a glance what was there I renamed all of the train folders, unfortunately BVE didn't like this as I hadn't changed the file associations as well. So instead of creating a lot of unnecessary work I returned the folders to their original names.

As Rich states it's up to the author and I'm afraid you just have to live with it.

After some reading, I understand the system better, but I still have a lot to learn. Now to decide to leave things alone, or start to change my folders and CSV files. Thank you for the information.
Now, if all developers would put a date on their "new and improved version". I found a foreign language site, and used google translate to find that the new and improved was from 2001.
I don't want to be complaining about BVE, because I love going on rail trips all over the world, and after seeing the Jubilee Line video on youtube, it makes some of the BVE journeys seem even more real.

Was British Rail better than todays privitised rail service? Would British rail have used today's railway subsidies better than the individual companies? Is today's subsidy for the railways far more than BR had (in real terms)? Would we have seen any closed lines re-opened under BR?

I dont think the BVE forum is the correct place for that....
