Flipping heck 60 a day !!! - that makes me look like a mere amateur <D

How did you do it ? Cold Turkey ?

Sales have dropped partly due to people giving up and the influx of "contraband" supplies.

Unbelieveably despite all the restrictions and campaigning by ASH and the like there are still about 10 Million Smokers left in the UK.

I was quite lucky, I had a heart attack and was advised it might be a better idea to give it up, no brainwashing as in "it's the fags that did you in", just advice

One good idea is to be totally honest and list the advantages of smoking, once you've sat there with a blank piece of paper for a while have a go at chucking anything to do with smoking in the bin, open your diary and start marking the days without one, you'll be surprised how quickly it increases and you can multiply the days by the cost of however many packs you used to smoke

I'd say keep off the patches and gum if you can but steer well clear of anything that looks like, or is used like, a cigarette, use them and you'll never get the feel of a cigarette out of your system

I've managed 2587 days, no I don't expect a pat on the back, and it's the best decision I've ever made in my life, you and your family won't regret it if you dump the habit

If your a particularly heavy smoker it's funny to see the reaction of those that know you well.

"YOU? YOU? YOU? really gave up cigarettes"

Sometimes I wonder if I'm missing out on not experiencing the feeling of giving up smoking. I just don't understand why anyone would ever try a cigarette in the first place, given that being close to someone smoking is so unpleasant.

I know as a non smoker, never been a smoker, I might not "get it" but I really would be genuinely interested in knowing what a smoker perceives to be the advantages of smoking

The trouble is that you don't regard it as unpleasant when you start, that only comes later and even then only if you don't find reasons to claim that you 'enjoy' it

You definitely haven't missed out on giving up because you won first prize by never starting

I would say that the average smoker starts when they are immature and, possibly, under the influence of their 'smart' and 'sophisticated' peers. Once hooked it's damnably difficult to break the habit, 'advantages' are then often used to cover up the lack of willpower needed to do the sensible thing

Most cigarettes I consume are of the habitual variety, however the first one of the day or if you have gone without one for an extended period - sheer heaven as you get that "hit" :p

There are thousands of epidemiological studies available online which either entirely, or partly disagree with that statement. I am strugglling to find anything at all on Medline which agrees.

(also, the term is 'not proven')

I am aware of that - and neither is your case :p
