I suspect that they are only used for passengers connecting to/from the long haul leisure destinations served by BA from Gatwick such as Las Vegas, Orlando and a number of Caribbean destinations.
Tbf I used to be a regular user of the route for work purposes. It was always the cheaper option compared to using LCY which I try to use exclusively now.
I imagine BA don’t really care if that’s the case, they’ll only be running it for the connecting passengers.
And if they’ve made the decision then clearly the loads aren’t that good and/or they reckon they could make more money flying their own aircraft somewhere else.

Emerald, who are operating it, only have ATR72. Flybe’s Embraers are long gone, unless you’re counting the 45-seater ERJs that Loganair have.
The ATR72 has a wider cabin than the Q400. Having regularly flown both, I prefer the ATR. And airlines much prefer the ATR because it’s cheaper to run.
ATR42/72s are boarded from the rear - the front door is for the cargo hold, which is located between the cockpit and the passenger cabin for weight and balance reasons.
This is why airlines that offer "business" class on ATRs generally have it as the back couple of rows. Some, like Iberia, even number the rows from back to front.

This one surprised me; BA are replacing their A320s from Glasgow to Gatwick with ATR72s to be operated by Emerald (same as Aer Lingus regional services).. so expect a two hour+ journey time and no biz up front.
Seems and off thing to do, cutting seems better - unless they want to keep the slots. London Passengers as you say will go to City / Heathrow if they want BA and EasyJet otherwise.
even for the long haul, I am sure KLM (via Amsterdam) will welcome this business if Edinburgh doesn’t still have direct flights.
I would assume that BA have little interest in the London to Edinburgh market and are running the flights primarily for connecting passengers. (If BA persist with their plans, then I would hope that those connecting passengers would look for alternatives!)

I would only really consider Luton for arrivals, for which it would be fine for me as when I used it (once, from Bergen), I found it relatively easy to get to the East Coast Mainline, compared to Heathrow, as I was able to get a bus to Hitchin, to head north via Peterborough (had I stayed on the bus I could have had a single change at Stevenage onto an LNER stopper).
There is considerable passenger traffic between both cities as many financial services businesses have primary and secondary offices. What percentage that is of total passenger flows, I'm sure someone would have a decent view.

APD plays a big part, but it's not the only factor. Some city pairs have higher fares than others for very random reasons.
As an example it was several hundred pounds cheaper for my bother and sister-in-law to fly MAN-LHR-BGI this Christmas than it would have been to just fly LHR-BGI.
This has been a thing, from different airports, for a good 25+ years. I can remember some incredible deals from Lisbon a good 20 years ago. People want direct, so flying with a stopover means offering an inducement. Either a better product or cheaper fare.
This is the sort of post that I can read without looking at who posted it, and still know exactly who posted it!
(which I consider a good thing, as I know very few people who smoke, and even fewer who are vocal about it! )

Latest problem I've come across hardly any American Hotels have Triples (3 beds) in one Room.
Had a great itinerary planned on BAH Business Aer Lingus/BA
EDI- DUB
DUB-SFO
So pre-clearance downside EI for Aer Lingus to Dublin Economy - would you still get Lounge Access if going to join a Business Flight from Dublin ?
Coming back Las Vegas to EDI via LHR/LCY
My son could have met us in Edinburgh and when we got back as there's an Airport Transfer (LHR to LCY) he could have waved me and my Daughter goodbye as he could get a train back to the W Mids. as we headed back to EDI. Stopping short but in possession of bags for Airport change so no problem.

I used Gatwick on a Saturday in 2016 to go to London for the day from EDI. I also bumped into a couple we knew on the flight who were connecting to Florida. It appears to work well as a short haul O&D airport, the Southern trains were smooth that day to/from Victoria and there was no queue whatsoever at security on the way back. I suppose the issue with Gatwick is it doesn't have the premium facilities that Heathrow has for connecting pax now that airlines such as Virgin have shifted their ops to Heathrow etc....? Although I'm not that familiar with Gatwick. Certainly subpar lounges is the main problem at Manchester.
We are aware of an issue with emails from the Forum to Microsoft-based email accounts (hotmail/outlook/live.com email addresses). This is being looked into currently, thanks for your patience meanwhile.
