Regarding '1' in the post above. The crosshead is one of the drivers for the piston valve (through the combination lever). If the crosshead is broken then its possible that valve would not be able to release steam from the cylinder at the end of its stroke. Pressure rises in the cylinder, due to the momentum of the loco, and the cylinder relief valve pops, or blows out completely if the pressure rise is too sudden or to great for the relief valve to cope with.

I've seen a picture elsewhere on the web. The crosshead broke at the connection to the piston rod. The crosshead remaining properly attached to the slidebars. So not, 'dropped motion,' which would be more concerning because of the potential consequences.
