Brit rail pass info request

Hi all
Friend is coming to uk from Australia to do a 6 month period of study at university.

I consider myself pretty well au fait with uk tickets but as I live in uk I’ve never engaged in any detail with Brit rail passes as we can’t buy them.

But it occurs to me that it might be good value for her to buy one before she leaves Australia if she’s intending to do a few long distance trips after she arrives.

Can anyone give me useful Gen on these passes
Eg
Where to buy them
How far in advance can you buy a Brit rail pass?
are there different types of pass?
Do they permit unlimited travel or are there eg peak or toc specific restrictions in use?
I assume these days they are digital passes and you somehow enact the day/ date you want to use?

Any other advice info gratefully received.

I would assume that after the Brit rail pass expires she should just buy a 16-25 railcard for remaining trips whilst in uk. She is aged 22.

Yes, there are a series of different varieties such as continuous days or X days out of Y months.

Fully unlimited

I would assume that after the Brit rail pass expires she should just buy a 16-25 railcard for remaining trips whilst in uk. She is aged 22.

She may legally use a BritRail pass until she has run up 6 months' residency in the UK, though the pass is supposed to be purchased whilst abroad. After that yes a 16-25 Railcard is likely to be best.

There doesn't appear to be a Eurail one-country pass for Great Britain, with the website directing you to Britrail. There is one, however, for Interrail!

There isn't a GB-only Eurail pass. There is a GB-only Interrail pass, but the options with Interrail are more limited (they only offer the flexi pass). Interrail passes are cheaper but the difference is negligible- for instance the saving is EUR3 on the 3-in-1m pass- but Britrail is much less of a fanny on to use.

I use ACPRail to buy the BritRail pass. It's a good service and I recommend the mobile option. Although it asks for a start date when you buy it this doesn't seem to be binding other than as the start of the 12 months in which you have to validate the pass. It asks the start date again when you activate the pass and that's also when you put your passport details in. Once activated it sends you a PDF with a (Aztec) barcode, which you can save to your phone. The Aztec code works some barriers but not all of them. I've not had an issue getting let through barriers.

She needs to buy the pass before she arrives in the UK- all the retailer websites are geo-blocked in the UK. But she can activate it after arrival.

ACPRail will offer to make reservations for a fee. This fee can be avoided by making seat reservations through the GWR website.
