Hey all,

I know I haven't posted much since I got my access back (I've been too busy...), but I wish to ask a question.

I wish to travel to Leeds overnight next weekend. However, I do not want to use Advance tickets, just in case the plan changes. So I have done a search and the best I can find seems to be the following:

BRI - HFD @ £18.75 (thanks Mojo :) )
BHM - SOT @ £9.10
SOT - SYB @ £9.45
SYB - LDS @ £8.65

This comes to a total of £45.95, but can anyone do any better?

Just to point that that technically the Bristol - Hereford ticket is not valid to end the journey at Birmingham as no break of journey is allowed on the outward paortion

Restriction : 8A
Available as listed below on any day.

OUTWARD TRAVEL
Valid on any train.

Break of journey is not permitted except to change trains at an intermediate station or to access station facilities.

RETURN TRAVEL
Valid on any train.

Not sure how they can enforce it though. You won't leave the station at New Street and won't show any other tickets on the first train, nor show the first ticket on subsequent trains.

Break of journey may not be allowed but surely stopping short is!

In any case I expect any guard would give you a wide berth after arguing over the validity of a BRI-HFD ticket via Brum.

According to the NCoC, Break of Journey includes not only leaving railway property in the middle of the journey, but also starting late and stopping short.

There shouldn't be much argument as the routeing guide clearly allows it.

@MikeWh

Thanks - I didn't realise that BoJ included this - I thought starting/stopping short was always allowed (except Advance tickets).

The route may be valid according to the RG, but not according to NRE and common sense, Hereford being about halfway between Bristol and Birmingham! (Presumably allowed due to the lack of Bristol-Worcester trains?)

I don't fully agree with that, Mike.

National Rail Conditions of Carriage said:
C. USE OF TICKETS

16. Starting, breaking or ending a journey at intermediate stations

You may start, or break and resume, a journey (in either direction in the case of a return ticket) at any intermediate station, as long as the ticket you hold is valid for the trains you want to use. You may also end your journey (in either direction in the case of a return ticket) before the destination shown on the ticket. However, these rights may not apply to some types of tickets for which a break of journey is prohibited, in which case the relevant Train Companies will make this clear in their notices and other publications.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/system/galleries/download/misc/NRCOC.pdf

In the final sentence, the use of the word rights instead of right makes it clear that we are discussing three rights:
  • starting a journey at any intermediate station
  • breaking a journey at any intermediate station
  • resuming a journey at any intermediate station

The conditions for some ticket types make it clear that all three rights do not apply. For example, restriction GC for ticket type BOS, used for a Standard Advance Single Leeds - London Terminals route EC & Connections:

Advance Ticket terms and conditions said:
You may not start, break and resume, or end your journey at an intermediate station except to change to/from appropriate connecting trains where these are shown on your ticket(s) or other official itinerary.

http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/travel-i...nformation/Ticket-Sales-Terms-and-Conditions/

The conditions for some other ticket types make it clear that one but not all of these three rights do not apply. For example, restriction 8A for ticket type SVR, used for a Standard Off-Peak Return Bristol Temple Meads - Hereford route Any Permitted:

National Fares Manual NFM 07 CD said:
