Bristol Temple Meads to Middlesbrough 22/8/15

Just looking into the above trip, would be 2 adults coming back the same day, cheapest I can find is £87 rtn via London & Eaglescliffe. I'm sure one of you guys can better that...

It's unclear what fares you have found exactly. The cheapest flexible fares involve getting to Middlesbrough after 3pm. You don't specify any time requirements though. Is cheapest really suitable? Have you tried trainsplit.com?

My guess is that you have done splits to get advance fares on Grand Central, I can't think what else would have you change at Eaglescliffe.

Have you also tried splitting at York or Darlington for either a TPE or Northern connection.

As it's a day return there might be savings to be had with a series of splits on the Cross Country route.

There is also the two together railcard - would that help you out?

To answer the OPs question literally, the "cheapest" way to do this is indeed to buy a Two Together Railcard, splitting at the usual places for an XC journey (as calculated on trainsplit.com and documented in numerous threads), arriving into Middlesbrough at 1512!

It wouldn't be much of a day in Middlesbrough! (Though maybe that's not an entirely bad thing )

Sorry didnt put enough detail in the original post i shouldve said what i had found was £87 per person not £87 in total. It actually works out to be £88.05 i havent included the travel across London fare as both people have oystercards.

Would be arriving in Boro anytime before 2pm leaving around 5.30

Trains i have used to get £88.05 pp as follows

5.33 BRI PAD
8.11 KGX EAG
11.07 EAG MID

17.55 MID EAG
18.14 EAG KGX
22.35 PAD BRI

Easily beatable using trainsplit.com and a Two Together Railcard, and you only need one railcard.
