I think that there may be engineering works in the West country over the weekend and was wondering if one has a ticket to Bristol is it valid to/from either station ? For example you have "London Terminals" ticket which allows journeys to / from several London stations. Is there the equivalent "Bristol Stations" or "Bristol Terminals" or do you get given a ticket which is Bristol station specific.

Cheers,
Z

Yep, tis allowed. Routeing Guide concurs. Both stations are in the Bristol Group.

From the Routeing Guide:

GROUP STATIONS
Some stations are grouped together to improve interchange between trains
by offering customers access to a wider choice of train services and station
facilities. A customer may travel via any station in such a group, including
doubling back, provided that the group is on one of the permitted routes
between their origin and destination stations. This extended availability is for
interchange purposes only and does not apply where the origin or destination
stations are part of a group.

This exclusion means no it is not valid, surely?

You can only get a ticket to one or the other.

If you are unsure which you are getting off at just get a ticket to the furtherest of the two as fares to both are generally the same or there is a very small difference. If there is likely to be an issue with barriers and you know the ticket prohibits break of Journey, get a ticket to the nearest then if you do decide to go further just get an excess, which in some cases will be a Zero Excess.

Or if your on an Advance just buy an additional Day Single/Return ticket for £3.00/£3.10,
or an XC Only Anytime Day Single from Bristol Parkway-Bristol Temple Meads for £2.70.

An xxx to Bristol Temple Meads ticket is valid at Bristol Parkway if both of the following apply:
- The National Routeing Guide shows a permitted route from xxx to Bristol Temple Meads passing through Bristol Parkway*.
- The ticket you have permits break of journey.

An xxx to Bristol Parkway ticket is valid at Bristol Temple Meads if both of the following apply:
- The National Routeing Guide shows a permitted route from xxx to Bristol Parkway passing through Bristol Temple Meads*.
- The ticket you have permits break of journey.

*Admittedly the NRG will only show 'Bristol' on maps, however it shouldn't be too difficult to determine from where the line is coming from/going to whether you pass through one to get to the other.

There is no equivalent Bristol Stations ticket, and any Advance tickets are valid only at the destination printed on them.

In reality you will have no problems using a ticket to Temple Meads at Parkway or the other way around for long distance journeys where the fare is the same. Obviously don't try and use a Bedminster to Temple Meads ticket at Parkway, or a Yate to Parkway ticket at Temple Meads! If coming in from either the North or the South then for long distances the fares are often the same, so unless you are on a ticket which prohibits break of journey then buy a ticket to the further destination. If you want to later carry on then you should be able to get a zero excess.

As dan_atki says, there are a number of cases where one could legitimately be going to Bristol Parkway via Temple Meads and breaking their journey there (eg. from London). The gatelines seem to accept a ticket because of this.

Up until about 4 years ago, coming in from Cheltenham and North of, the single fare to Parkway was 20p cheaper than one to Temple Meads.

I think that there are going to be works after 1545 today and all day tomorrow around the Bristol / Gloucester area. Parkway may be closed hence the need to travel to / from Temple Meads.

Isn't the likely reason for this discussion that there are two types of groups of station, ie Routeing groups as discussed, but also Fares groups, that used to be shown in the old NFM preamble, but aren't listed online anymore?

If parkway is closed, wouldn't they let you travel to TM?

There is one direct train to London from Temple Meads via Parkway, but not in the other direction. Perhaps that confirms the route as valid?
