Bristol - Edale advice

Hi all

I want to travel from Bristol to Edale for the weekend after next, travelling up Friday 19th and returning Sunday 21st. I can buy a variety of advance singles but would prefer the flexibility of an open return, and am keen to avoid replacement buses from Birmingham to Gloucester on Sunday.

The off-peak return price is £119 but that specifies travel via Derby. For the return, I would like to go via Manchester and Newport South Wales in order to avoid the buses, and to maybe spend a bit of time in Manchester. I presume the "via Derby" ticket wouldn't allow this route, so is there a reasonably-priced ticket that would?

Could you book from Bristol to somewhere like New Mills Central for which "Any Permitted" and "via Hereford" fares are available. From New Mills Central to Edale, £6.00 Anytime Day Singles are possible. Just an idea!

For £102.20, you can get a Bristol to Crewe Anytime Return (via Hereford), plus a Crewe to Edale Anytime Short Return. That's if you're willing to go via Newport and Crewe for your outbound leg, of course!

Whilst i regonise its not everybody's cup of tea, Id use National Express from Bristol to Sheffield (1 change in Birmingham) then Rail to Edale. Its about £30 to 40 total for a journey time thats not a great deal longer. It would likely be a whole lot more reliable. You could come back via Manchester if you wanted. Both Sheffield and Manchester Coach stations are within 10 mins walk of the rail station.

Thanks all. Good to hear about the Crewe and New Mills options. Would the New Mills ticket be valid for travel via Derby & Sheffield on the way out, getting off at Edale?

Thanks also for the National Express suggestion, but I'm keen to avoid bus travel.

Taking Chinley rather than New Mills, because Chinley is a Routeing Point whereas New Mills isn't, the defined routes Bristol-Chinley can be followed at https://data.atoc.org/routeing-maps:

• MP+MS via Shrewsbury
• PM+MS via Birmingham and Manchester
• PY+HV via Derby

However Chinley has the same problem as Edale - the ticket specifies "via Derby" and there is no "any permitted" ticket.

New Mills allows routes via three routeing points - Chinley, Guide Bridge & Manchester so it'll allow a variety of routes including the ones desired also. And there's an "any permitted" ticket to New Mills Central. The only additional requirement will be a single Edale to New Mills to start the return journey because the outbound ticket is only valid for one day.

EDIT However the fare-check rule:
Bristol-New Mills SVR £107:60
Bristol-Chinley SVR £119
means that Bristol-New Mills via Chinley (and Edale, Derby and Sheffield) isn't allowed. I think.

[The fare from Bristol to Chinley, if it is to be a valid routeing point, has to be equal to or less than the complete fare Bristol-New Mills, which it isn't, so this is not a valid routeing point for this journey.]

If I'm right, then I think the SVR to New Mills with an additional ticket each way to/from Edale (£6 single) but travel via Manchester and not Derby in both directions could work. Slightly cheaper per post 4 above probably as well.
