Anybody have any info on NR's plans for Bristol East Yard, the former marshalling area between Temple Meads and St Annes tunnels? Lifting of old track panels is well underway, is if being flogged off to the developers or is there something more interesting planned?

I read a few months a go that the site was being used as a freight terminal? I'm assuming that all freight traffic has now ceased, in which case it can only have been on a trial basis?

I think you might be thinking of West Depot, which is currently used as an intermodal terminal.

I must say I've not any freight activity in there, although presumably there once was as there is a fairly substantial fixed crane on the site. In general though it is just a large expanse of seemingly unused land, there are a couple of active sidings which see the odd charter or NR train stabled, that seems about it. I hadn't realised there were sidings further back until I saw the old track panels being loaded up.

It would be good to see the area put to a constructive railway use, but I have to say my money is on it being cleared out and sold. I guese we'll find out!

The area was of course the down sorting sidings and opposite was the up marshalling yard, now built over with factories.

That's in the Bristol Metro plan, but now you raise it, perhaps the East Depot site would have been a better location for a station, but I don't think there is much housing on both sides to justify that. Reopening the B&NS to Brislington as a tram / train line would probably of greater benefit. If you use one of the Google packages and do Street View looking west from Langdon Court Road, St Annes, Bristol, over the railway, you get an amazing view of the whole site.
