There appears to be a lot of cancellations on London/Swansea Bristol Parkway/Manchester services today.

Replacement buses are in operation and passengers being terminated at Patchway?

Any idea what's going on?

I saw the ludicrous nature of this PR put out. So somehow trains from Swansea to Paddington will run but not between Cardiff and Paddington.

This is in the Bristol Post

http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Train-...way-Swindon/story-28163078-detail/story.html?

The CrossCountry route between Penzance and Glasgow and the Great Western Railway between London Paddington and Cardiff Central is disrupted due to emergency engineering works near Bristol Parkway and Swindon and Cheltenham Spa.

Trains are unable to run between Bristol Parkway and Gloucester. This will be the case until around 2pm.

Great Western Railway passengers travelling between Bristol Parkway and Gloucester should use CrossCountry services.

And passengers for Yate and Cam and Dursley should use replacement buses which are running between Bristol Parkway and Gloucester.

CrossCountry services are being diverted and are not calling at Bristol Parkway while services between Cardiff Central and London Paddington will not run at all.

Services between Swansea and London Paddington will be diverted – this will extend the journey time by up to 35 minutes – and services between Swansea and London will not stop at Bristol Parkway but will stop at Patchway.

There will be a bus service between Patchway and Bristol Parkway.

Work out that lot! :(

What that probably means (and looking at NRE confirms it) is that the Cardiff - Paddington services are being cancelled but the Swansea - Paddington ones are running, presumably so less services are having to run through the diverted route.

I'd worked that one out, but the wording on the NRES website is very poor as it could be taken to read that no trains were running between Cardiff and London. I know Cardiff is on the railway line between Swansea and London, but does everybody?

Looking at RTT it appears no trains operated between Westerleigh Jn and Wootton Bassett Jn between midnight and 1500, but XC were not affected until around 1100. Do I take it that the problem was with Westerleigh Jn itself, or was there more than one problem?

AFAIK an engineering train has run through the points at Westerleigh Jct during a possesion of the line.

That is exactly what it means. The hourly Paddington to Cardiffs and return were cancelled and the Swanseas diverted via Bath and calling at Patchway instead of Bristol Parkway with bustitution between the two. Although XC may have run via Westerleigh Jn, GWR trains did not run between Bristol Parkway and Gloucester.

I did read earlier that local Great Malvern to Weymouth services were capped at Gloucester due to track problems (points failure listed on journe check) and a replacement train was sent from Bristol to continue to Weymouth. That train then developed a fault and then terminated early at Yeovil Pen Mill (and restarted there for the next journey)

It looks like some of the trains sent from Bristol were probably due maintenance! There has been an abnormally large amount of train faults reported today.

I saw the 0601 Glasgow to Plymouth held at Yate yesterday, for almost an hour.

0758 Swansea to London cancelled (0855 off Cardiff). 150120 on 0900 Cardiff to Plymouth very busy yesterday as staff at Cardiff were telling pax to take this to Temple Meads and catch 1000 to Padd from there.

Services still disrupted in the evening. Had 220011 on the 1705 Manchester to Cardiff last night and left Temple Meads about 25 minutes late.

What I can't work out is why some service appear to stopping at Parkway and some are stopping at Patchway instead. Very badly written, I have to agree.

That tends to happen this time of year due to wheel flats.

The contingency plan which is implemented if there are problems between Bristol Parkway and Wootton Bassett provides for some morning peak services to reverse at Bristol Parkway before running via Bath, and others running direct from Patchway to Filton.

All depends if how the track is laid out and where the points are in relation to one another.

For two trains to separately SPAD the stop boards or leave a possession without authorisation would be rather unfortunate?! The points were on the mainline at Westerleigh Junction, protected by signals from all directions.

One train, two point ends to the best of my knowledge?
