Brighton to Manchester route?

On Summer Friday nights in 1988 there was a Manchester - Weymouth overnight routed via New St, WCML, Gatwick, Hove and Southampton. It didn't go to Brighton station, but it did go through the Brighton conurbation. It was also diesel hauled from New St which was fairly unusual over the southern WCML in those days.
It would have gone through Preston Park and then turned right onto the Clftonville curve and on to Hove.

I recall using this service in 2001. It was 9th September. I was in Telford on my way to East Croydon when news about the Twin Towers came through. There was understandable apprehension about what might happen next. The XC option south of B'ham seemed an appealing way of avoiding central London......
