Brighton Mainline - Blue Lights at Stations

A lot of the stations on the Brighton Mainline have blue LED light boxes near the stairs. Does anyone know the reason why?

Without seeing them, they are possibly anti-suicide measures. Apparently, blue lighting is calming.

I saw this in a quieter part of the platform at Gatwick earlier in the week. I assumed it was an anti drugs measure as you might see in toilets, but I'm sure there are a variety of other potential reasons

Correct, sadly the BML had a spate of them a few years ago.

It also makes me laugh (and bang my head against the wall) when such features are used on bridges such as the Itchen Bridge, until a “patriotic taxi driver” (his words not mine) spent years running a campaign to get them changed to Red because of the local rivalry between Southampton (Red) and Portsmouth (Blue). There were other objectors such as Southampton Airport and Network Rail / South Western Railway but it looks like it’ll be changed to Red on match days.
