How long has there been a direct link from Brighton to the west country and wales or the midlands (Great Malvern as of today) ?

What stock was used prior to 158 introduction and is there photographic evidence?

I am sure there used to be a Wales and West service to Milford Haven which was great. Any photos of the 158s in the southern region when they were brand new alongside the slammers?

Thanks

When I was a lad in the 60s there was a Brighton - Plymouth service, it was possibly the only steam hauled service to operate out of there in the mid 1960s if I remember correctly.

Geordie back from exile.
I remember there was a Penzance - Brighton in the 80's, seem to recall a mixture of either a 50 or a 47 on the front and a rake of mk1's (maybe mk2's too)
The '84 timetable shows 1050 ex Penzance, arr Brighton 1820. The reverse was 0914 ex Brighton, arr Penzance 1709. These were both summer Saturdays only with a Friday service form Brighton at 1114, arr Penzance 1858. There was also a daily Cardiff - Brighton service and a Mon - Sat Brighton - Cardiff. Not sure what traction they would use, maybe a 33?

It's strange to think that, back in the early part of this century, you could get from Brighton directly to all sorts of exotic places such as Oxford, Birmingham, Oxenholme and Edinburgh/Glasgow.

Vic Mitchells book on Fareham - Salisbury has a pic of a 156 at Fareham in 1988. The captions describes it as a train from Portsmouth and Brighton joining at Fareham. Those are the units I remember on the various long distance Brightons of the time.

Brighton to Wales services were Loco hauled then replaced by 155 units, these then went off to be split in to 153s and were replaced by 156s. The intention was for these to be replaced by 158s but the first service took out a couple of hundred metres of the down platform at Shoreham by Sea, so 156s came back for a year until the route was properly cleared. When the 158s were first introduced its fair to say that they were fairly unreliable and it caused major problems on the route as there was nothing east of Fratton to move them out of the way. 150s have only really been used in the FGW which has seen a general run down in the services, loss of catering trolleys extended journey times etc.

33s were the motive power for the Brighton Cardiff/Penzance workings in the mid080s. At least as far as Exeter on the Penzance working. There were lots of 33s working local services in Devon then anyway, so it may have been just another 33 that took it on to the Zance rather than a 50.

There was a period in the late 80s or early 90s when the train went into Portsmouth Harbour, and then IIRR it was a 50 from Exeter to Portsmouth, then a 73 onwards to Brighton.

I remember when I was a lad in the 80s with my runabout ticket always getting a Class 33 from Barnham with Mk1 stock and later on Mk2 stock. Think it only used to go at weekends. Was nice though, beated going to Fratton and getting the 3 car DEMU to Southampton for sure.

There's a video here showing the last SWT service from Brighton - Paignton in 2007. Anyone know how often in the day this ran? Are the current Great Malvern's using the paths of these services up to Southampton/Salisbury? Or have I looked at it all completely wrong? :p

The path used to be xx57 off Brighton, later xx00, and was shared by SWT and Wessex, e.g. there was no 1657/1700 Brighton - Basingstoke service as this path was used by Wessex.

There was one Brighton - Paignton service on Saturdays, although there was a Sunday departure to Exeter as well.

Lewisday - yes you've cracked it, so expanding a bit on thefab444's reply...

The pre-December 2007 SWT weekday 'Brighton' service was 'much less than hourly', for want of a better expression...

Looking at the services there were big gaps in the SWT service to make room for FGW's odd Brighton extensions, amongst other reasons.

For example the basic down pattern around 2005/6 was an xx24 off Basingstoke towards Brighton, of which roughly one service in three started back from Reading, and was a DMU - the other 2 of 3 would be 450s. They went through Fareham at about xx08 generally, but the first SWT arrival in Brighton all the way from Reading was the 0656 arriving at 0923. An earlier arrival was run by FGW, but from Portsmouth Harbour - it still runs.

The 1424 off Basingstoke terminated at Fareham, at 1507, with the onward path being taken up by an FGW service, and the current service from Great Malvern is basically its successor, however the standard timings on the West Coastway were altered slightly for SN's altered timetable for their new franchise, so the exact paths are now different.

However there were no early evening SWT arrivals at Brighton between 1815 and 2113 because the relevant departures from Basingstoke ran to Portsmouth instead - and they still do...

In the up direction SWT had a similar 'short' service starting at Fareham at 1005 - this was because FGW's early westbound service had taken the 0857 slot off Brighton. (And oddly enough, like the similar down service already mentioned it didn't form a connection with FGW at Fareham...)

SWT's longer distance services from Brighton beyond Salisbury to the west country were hardly what you'd call a frequent service, with only one train to Paignton on a Saturday and to Exeter on a Sunday, but in broad terms the paths were shared with FGW and the much reduced weekend SWT Basingstoke/Reading services - the Sat Paignton service left Brighton in the 0957 slot for instance...

That's all very interesting! Cheers for the info! I take it that was the last time Platform 2 at Fareham was last regularly used for the terminating/starting services or did they run ECS somewhere after/before service?

They were useful fast services along the West Coastway though.

Up to a point - they did Brighton to Fareham typically in 1h13m - SN now take 1hr 20 with a few more stops - but I think they provide a more useful allround service since being diverted to Southampton, and more importantly they run every hour, 7 days a week.

I think it was only the down train from Basingstoke that terminated in P2, but there were certainly no passenger services diagrammed into Fareham P2 by the following summer timetable period (May 08), unfortunately I haven't got the info for Dec 07, but I can't think of anything else. The Lymington Cig turning move was diagrammed into P2 for a while though...
