Hi,

I am travelling to Hove for work next Monday evening. I've bought "advance singles" between Sandy and Hove, but I've realised I messed up - I should have bought my outgoing single to Brighton, as I'm travelling down in the evening and staying in a hotel in Brighton. Coming back from Hove is correct.

So, my first question is, can go to Brighton instead of Hove on my outgoing ticket? I presume the answer is no as there's no station group, and Brighton wouldn't be en route (I'd have to change at Preston Park.)

Assuming the answer to the above question is "no", can I cut short my Hove leg at Preston Park, and then just buy a single from PP to Brighton? Technically I think this may not be allowed as I'd be cutting short my journey at PP, but it doesn't seem unreasonable.

No, you can't, a Adavance ticket doesn't allow break of journey. For the Brighton/Hove issue I don't know.

Assuming it isn't valid, Your best bet is either £3.50 (£2.30 with a railcard) for Hove to Brighton Anytime Single (5 minutes) or £2 for bus 7 between Hove and Brighton (10min)

@Amanensia. Welcome to the forum. There's plenty of trains throughout the day between Hove and Brighton, typically 4 trains per hour, so you shouldn't have to wait too long for your connection.

Thanks both. I was so busy worrying about clever ways of re-routing that I didn't even think of just getting another train from Hove. That's clearly the right thing to do!

While this is true, wouldn't it be virtually zero risk assuming you bought an eticket for the PP->Brighton service?

How are the barriers setup in PP? If you need to go through the barriers to change platforms, that wouldn't work. If you can go straight over, then yeah, it would be virtually no risk.

Can you list exactly what tickets are held and what itinerary you have been given?

Also which hotel are you at as it might be possible to get a bus from Hove station to your hotel?

Advance single
Sandy -> East Croydon dep 1855
East Croydon -> Hove dep 2034

Staying at the Ibis right by the station. I'll either switch at PP or get a train back from Hove and either way just pay the £3.50 single fare, all good.

How much was your ticket and who did you book it with? An advance for £21.80 to Brighton on the 1855 arriving Brighton 21.13

I'd travel as booked. There's a 21.34 Hove to Brighton arriving 21.39

If you are delayed remember to claim delay repay against the full cost of all tickets. If you are delayed between East Croydon and Hove and not yet on the train then it might be quicker to travel via Brighton and ask to be let out.

£23, so it would've been cheaper to get it right! Interestingly the return leg (from Hove) was £21.80. Not sure why the difference.

There's also the number 7 bus from Hove station every 10 minutes 14, 24, 34, 44 etc minutes past the hour as a backup.

The policy of the rail industry is that although Advance tickets are intended to be used only between the origin and destination stations shown on the ticket, there may be occasions where a passenger joins the correct train but at a later station, or alights earlier than the indicated destination.

Although this is not strictly in accordance with the rules for Advance tickets, the Rail industry has agreed that in such cases, no additional fare should be charged (unless there is clear evidence of intent to try and avoid a higher fare).
