Brighton football.

Looking for advice for my friend who is planning an away football match at Brighton.

He holds a Freedom Pass and will be starting from Hayes and Harlington. I gather there is a travel zone around Brighton where you can get free travel by showing your match ticket, and Haywards Heath is within this zone. Presumably he could go via Victoria or London Bridge, and all he would need would be a return to Haywards Heath from either Coulsdon South, or Boundary Zone 6. Would the train need to stop at any of the split points?

A Freedom Pass counts as an area-based Ticket (as per the National Rail Conditions of Travel) so would be fine for a train to go non-stop from Coulsdon South (or any other outer London split point) as well as using whatever London terminal he likes.

Because most trains between London and Brighton use the Quarry Line (which doesn’t have any stations between Purley and Earlswood), I’d suggest getting a ticket from either Boundary Zone 6 or East Croydon (which is the same price).

I’m actually unsure as to whether the Brighton & Hove Albion free travel does count as an area-based Ticket, but it’s a bit academic anyway because everything stops at Haywards Heath now anyway!

Keep in mind that Brighton & Hove Albion’s free travel scheme only applies to home Premier League games (unless the club says otherwise) and is only for a period of time to each side of the match, so worth checking that too before you travel.

According to the club’s website it is from three and a half hours before the scheduled kick-off time to three and a half hours after the final whistle. The limits refer to start of journey. Check the Travel section of the club’s site. (Me, looking at a football club’s site!)
