Looking up the ticket prices for the 0859 journey on this service, an off peak return fare seems to be available, even though it is before 0930. The fare is cheaper than the peak fare available an hour earlier but not as cheap as the off peak fare available an hour later. Can anyone explain what has caused this situation?

Off-Peak Return is the old Saver ticket. They used to be unrestricted in the morning peak on tickets priced by Arriva Trains Northern (whose routes included North TPE) but First TPE decided to add a restriction so that SVR tickets aren't valid on pre-09:30 arrivals in to Manchester or Leeds on tickets they price, in the hope that it would mean their trains were less crowded in the morning peak.

Here's the full details of the restriction: http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=BGH&dest=0438&tkt=SVR

The off-peak ticket valid on the 0859 (at £13.60) has a restriction making it valid on trains arriving in Manchester after 0930 (this ticket is valid via Hebden Bridge or Huddersfield). The train an hour before will need the £15.90 ticket valid at any time but only via Hebden Bridge. On the train an hour after you can use the off-peak ticket valid only via Hebden Bridge after 0929 (£12.10).

Thanks, interesting that it is a First TPE fare when of course Northern run the direct trains on this route.

There are 2 fares. Any Permitted is TPE and Via Hebden Bridge is set by Northern. The direct service started only in the past few years so the setting of fares by TPE dates back to before that service began and the logical route was via Huddersfield.
