The 06:00 - 14:00 Monday - Friday "Quiet time" on the Brigg line is often used for engineering work. As the busier lines from Wrawby Junction to Scunthorpe & Lincoln see engineering work either overnights on Saturday's/Sunday's, or overnights on weeknights every 6 weeks (neither of the two lines at the same time), the Brigg line fits in for engineering work during the day on weekdays when it's required, hence the 06:00 - 14:00 Monday - Friday slot. However, this isn't always used, and traffic can still use the Brigg line between 06:00 and 14:00 Monday - Friday. Just don't rely on it being every day! What has been a solid block on the line since reopening in 2008, however, is an engineering possession every Thursday morning 06:00 - 14:00, so if your going to go to see traffic down there on a morning, don't go on a Thursday!
The line is open Monday to Saturday between 06:00 Monday & 22:00 Saturday, but can be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if needed for diversions. As has been mentioned, the main traffic on the line is coal to West Burton & Cottam Power Stations. It is also used as a relief for the busy line via Scunthorpe for coal to Eggborough/Drax/Ferrybridge Power Stations, also. Passenger services run on Saturdays only between Sheffield & Cleethorpes, between 08:00 & 20:00. It is a useful diversionary line when the route via Scunthorpe is closed, so can see extra traffic such as the Jarrow, Preston & Stalybridge tanks too, but these usually run overnight.
