SERVICE DISRUPTION YORK-DONCASTER

Due to a structural problem with a bridge between York and Doncaster, rail services to/from the North East and Scotland are disrupted.

Short notice alterations and cancellations will occur. Passengers are advised that those services that operate will be extremely busy.

Services between Leeds and London are unaffected.

Network Rail's engineers are working on repairing the bridge. However, this problem is expected to last until at least Wednesday 26th September.
GNER and Network Rail apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.

Single line working in operation according to the guard on the HST I caught from Durham to York earlier this evening. When I got to York, I expected to see loads of northbound services being recorded as delayed, but there was no evidence of this.

The ECML hasn't exactly had an easy tim recently... Let's hope they get everything back on track (forgive the pun) as soon as possible.

there are delays of approx 45+ mins on northbound services, as its taking approx 1 hr 5 mins to do dnny-york.

I wonder why they are not sending HSTs via Askern as that route takes 39 mins, which would result in only 15-20 mins of delay.

The 0930 kgx-abd is wedged and 45 late, I wonder if there are a lot of West Ham fans trying to get to NCL in time or kick-off? the may just make it!

I'd guess none spare bearing in mind the Tyne Valley Diversions are on.

Maybe we will see some during the week.

HSTs diverting via Askern - .
No HSTs have been reported as going via Askern, despite Askern being the logical route.

Askern takes 39 mins, only 19 mins longer than the direct route, yet GNER seem happy to send HSTs via the direct route that then get delayed by up to 45 mins. :!:

Although I'm not sure who signs Askern other than Leeds crews? I don't recall any trains apart from the 23.30 KGX - LDS running this way unless the last NCL does?

GC conductors (will) sign the route as a diversion, we've been out on a 37 last week doing York - Knottingley - Donc - P'bro and back. Also need to know York - Selby - Templehirst Jcn.
Could it be a fuel issue with HSTs having to go via carlisle?

It appears thet the bridge problem stemmed from NR /or contractors on their behalf using a heavyweight high output tamper rather than a lighter weight one, and this leading to the dislodging of the bridge parapet.

I think there are other crews that sign it, as a few weeks ago trains all the way through from Newcastle were diverting this way due to engineerwing works.

Leeds and Kings Cross crews (GNER) sign Askern. According to Jono some HSTs have been diverting via Askern, Hull services running via Goole (avoiding Selby) and with one train per hour in each direction over the affected bridge.

1E10 0755 ABD - KGX and 1S12 1030 KGX - ABD should both run via Askern to a revised timetable tomorrow.

I believe that Donny drivers sign Askern too - indeed, isn't the 2330 ex-KX a Donny job?

Is there any way to find out which trains are going via Askern tomorrow (Thursday)?

Askern is booked 50 mins for the 22:00, but in reality takes 39 mins. This compares to approximately 1 hour via the 'normal' route at present!

How did the 1030 overtake the 1000 if they both went the same route? was the 1000 looped?

Were you alone or with a few other bashers, as I hear quite a few bashers were on the train? you were lucky 1E10 was late as you had a minus connection!

1000 looped at Holgate!! We ran straight past it!

We were very lucky that 1E10 was +10 or the whole attempt at covering Askern would have been ruined!! I was with a couple of others and there were a fair few more on the train flailing away :D
I have no idea why 1S12 ran mainline, the route conductor was on the platform at Donny ready to go, only to sit on the cushions via mainline! We understandably wasn't impressed having been called in despite finishing at 1am the previous day only to do nowt!

When you say Askern you on about Shaftholme-Ferrybridge-Church Fenton-Colton or what?

And i gather the accident happened at the Selby-ECML Triangle by the OHNS?

That's right. Askern is the only sizeable place on the Knottingley-Shaftholme line. But it avoids any confusion compared to saying "via Knottingley".

Askern was joined by Norton and Womersley all having stations on what was, at the turn of the century (roughly), the main line from Yorkshire to London. Knottingley was a major interchange station, with (at least?) 4 platforms and a proper roof (I've seen a photo somewhere). Passengers for Leeds had to change at Knottingley, which trains to the North East continued via Ferrybridge (which also had a station, plus a few others on that line) and Church Fenton. All that changed when the line via Selby opened. Of course, it all changed again with the Temple Hirst-Colton line in the early 80s, bringing ECML expresses back to passing through Colton and Copmanthorpe.

So, going via Askern means you're taking the original line from Doncaster to York.

If anyone has any more history on the lines, I'd be interested to read it.
