breaking season tickets

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is legitimate to split a season ticket to reduce costs.

The journey is Nailsea & Backwell - London . I have looked on the national rail conditions of carriage and there seems to be conflicting information unless I am reading it incorrectly.

19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire
journey and one of the following applies:
(a) they are both Zonal Tickets unless special conditions prohibit their use in this
way. The Ticket Seller will, if you ask, advise you whether you can use a Zonal
Ticket in combination with another ticket.
(b) the train you are in calls at a station where you change from one ticket to another;
or
(c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include
Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport
executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are
not.

From reading that quoted text it would imply that, with multiple season tickets, the train you are on must also call at the split point. So if you have A->B and B->C season tickets, the train you're on must call at B, or you change trains there.

I'm not sure if it is expressly forbidden to use multiple season tickets or not. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is, but I'm not sure from where I get that!

If you have two season tickets then part (b) will apply. Part (c) applies if ONLY one of the tickets is a season ticket. It is unlikely that you could find two tickets that would qualify as zonal for this journey.

That is correct.

You can split season tickets just like any other ticket. Whether it's worth it will depend on whether you are happy to be tied only to trains that call at the point where you change from one ticket to another.

If any of 19(a) or 19(b) or 19(c) applies, then you can do it.

19(a) doesn't apply unless you're talking about a Travelcard.

19(b) will apply if you get a train that calls at whatever station is the station where you change from one ticket to the next.

19(c) doesn't apply because it refers to "one" season; you are using more than one.

So you must ensure you comply with 19(b).
