Breaking Journey with Travelcard

I want to travel between Waterloo and Woking. However, I have a Zones 1-6 travelcard valid for that day and time. Can I purchase tickets from Surbiton to Woking, and use my Travelcard for the Waterloo-Surbiton leg, seeing as the train stops at Surbiton?

As long as the train stops at Surbiton, yes.

If not, you can buy a ticket to/from "Boundary Zone 6" which will allow you to do the same thing on a non stop train.

Do you want to break your Journey at Surbiton though or where? It may be better to get a Boundary Zone 6 to Woking ticket instead, which is valid on the non-stop trains from Waterloo to Woking!

If exactly one of the tickets was a season ticket then the train would not need to stop where you change tickets

It makes a slight difference.

The advice to buy a ticket from "Boundary Zone 6" to Woking holds good whether you have a day travelcard or a travelcard season.

But with a day travelcard, if you bought a ticket from Surbiton to Woking, you would have to make sure you were on a train that stopped at Surbiton.

In contrast, if you had a Travelcard season ticket, condition 19(c) of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage would mean that the combination of the Travelcard season, and a Surbiton-Woking ticket, would also be valid for trains that don't stop at Surbiton.
