I wonder whether the experts would be able to help me. I wish to travel from Coventry to Leuchars later this month. I have young persons' railcard. I plan to buy a Off-Peak Return. For break of journey on the outward leg would I be allowed to break my journey in Leeds for a couple of days?

BREAK OF JOURNEY
Break of journey is allowed on
Off-Peak tickets unless
otherwise indicated by a
restriction shown against
the ticket's validity code.
Off-Peak Singles and the
outward portion of Off-Peak
Returns are valid for travel
on the date shown on the
ticket. Where a journey can't
be completed within one day,
break of journey for an
overnight stay is allowed.
Where a journey continues into
the next day, travel must
resume before 1200 and any
relevant time restrictions
apply. No further break of
journey is allowed except for
the purposes of changing
trains.
Return portions of Off-Peak
Return tickets are valid for
travel until 0230 on the day
following the last day of
validity (i.e. one calendar
month from the outward
journey). If a passenger is
still travelling at 0230, they
may stay on the train to
complete that part of the
journey but no further break
of journey is allowed and all
travel must be completed by
1200.
So breaking your return journey for 2 days at Leeds is fine. Breaking your outward for 2 days is not. It is possible to stay 1 night in Leeds on the basis that you cannot complete your journey in one day - this means that, for example, if you left Coventry at 2027 and got to Leeds 2316, you could then stay overnight at Leeds but you must leave Leeds before 1200 and you can't break your journey anywhere else before Leuchars.
What isn't clear, is if you set off at, say, 0800, and then break your journey in Leeds (which you are allowed to do), if you then decide to 'resume' at a time that it is then too late to get to Leuchars, if you are bound to travel beyond Leeds before staying overnight, or if you can stay overnight in Leeds.
If you want to stay 2 days in Leeds then there is no question that you will have to do it on the return leg. 1 night you can get away with and no more - otherwise you'll need multiple tickets.
