Break of journey restrictions are contained within each ticket's restriction code. So, for example, code VN restricts BoJ on the outward portion.

It says the restriction code is valid on Mondays-Fridays.

nre.co.uk/vn

I take this to mean I can use a ticket marked VN to break a journey on a Saturday, using the out portion?

Any help much appreciated, thanks :)

It is the time restrictions that apply Monday to Friday. The break of journey restriction applies any day. So for this ticket break of journey is not permitted on the outward portion. However, how did you buy the ticket and where you advised of the outward break of journey restriction at the time of purchase?

I agree that the intention of any break of journey restriction on flexible fares is to avoid people starting short at peak times, which only apply Mondays-Fridays, so there isn't any rationale for having any such restriction on weekends.

In any case, a BOJ restriction can arguably only apply if it is "made clear" to you when you purchase the ticket.

If the gates are in operation and the ticket is not accepted by the gates, asking staff if you may break your journey is almost certainly going to yield a positive response, with the only likely exceptions being the high profile cases such as starting at Preston with a ticket from Lancaster to London in the morning peak, which clearly isn't going to apply here.

Looking at the web page, it does seem relatively clear to the average person that all the restrictions stated on that table only apply Monday-Friday only. Therefore BOJ is permissible on Saturday or Sunday

It's difficult to argue with this, especially as if there is any doubt, then under consumer law, the conditions which favour the customer are those which must prevail.

But it will never be tested, as no-one is ever going to be charged the excess in the circumstances described, and if they were then the TOC would back down and issue a refund.

To be fair, that is not at all what nre.co.uk/VN says.

So in my view the proposed break of journey at the weekend is permitted.

Note that where you travel on a CrossCountry service, break of journey is always permitted with that ticket.

I really don't understand why they pratted about complicating it rather than sticking with the old BR rule of no on the outbound and yes on the return.

Journey completed fine. Barriers open when breaking journey. Ticket rejected by barriers when resuming journey, but was let through no questions asked.
