Break of Journey Query

Hello

Please can you help. I'm looking at going from Adlington (Cheshire) to Warrington.
Is it possible to do the following on the outward part of an off peak return (costs £14.60)?
Adlington-Manchester (arrive before 9)
Break the journey for several hours, then on the same day
Manchester-Warrington (after 1800).

well, arriving before 9 is difficult on an off peak ticket (off peak starting at 9:30 on the Stoke-Macc-Manc line) unless its a weekend, but apart from that, i think yer ok

If I'm reading Avantix right (and I think I am) then no a break of journey is not permitted except to change trains or to access station facilities. It also doesn't mention it being time restricted as it says:

OUTWARD TRAVEL
Valid on any train.

Break of journey is not
permitted except to change
trains at an intermediate
station or to access station
facilities.

RETURN TRAVEL
Valid on any train.

Correct; on that journey a break of journey is allowed on an off-peak day return but not an off-peak return. And an off-peak day return is only valid after 0930.

Accessing station facilities (which could mean going to Bonapartes for several hours!) or walking between stations (e.g. Man Picc to Man Vic) does NOT count as a "break of journey" and is permitted.

In theory, on your walk from Man Picc to Man Vic, if you stepped in private property between the stations you could be considered guilty of breaking your journey, and 'punished'. I will not comment on the morality of doing such a thing, nor the likelihood of getting caught, you can decide that for yourself.

To be a bit more serious: I have never seen a proper definition of what a "break of journey" actually is; the nearest NRCoC comes to it is:

"For the purposes of this Condition and Condition 11, you will be treated as breaking your
journey if you leave a Train Company’s or Rail Service Company’s stations after you start
your journey other than:
(i) to join a train at another station, or
(ii) to stay in overnight accommodation when you cannot reasonably
complete your journey within one day, or
(iii) to follow any instructions given by a member of a Train Company’s staff."

...... which isn't actually a definition of what a "break of journey" is, just a couple of examples as to what it isn't.

The "punishment", in the event that the scenario (which is rapidly approaching absurd ) were to come to pass and the person caught, would be an excess to whatever ticket does allow break of journey, possibly an SOR.

If they're within the station building, yes - the Wetherspoons at Leeds is (as Yorkie is fond of pointing out) amongst many others.
