Just heard on the news about rioting in Brazil, one of its causes is bus fares rising...

What a lame reason to riot.

Could you imagine if, say Stagecoach decide to put 10p on single fare and 50000 ****ed off bus users take to the streets and riot

People just need an excuse to start rioting, then they take it out on context and use it for their own ends, just look at what happened in London in Summer 2011...

I think a lot of it is influenced by the fact they are hosting the World Cup (and Confederation Cup right now) and are spending a hell of a load of money, which would otherwise be going to the people and public services.

Matt has quite succinctly made the reasons quite clear in his posting. The figure of circa 14 billion dollars has been mentioned for these public works and many in Brazil see this amount of public expenditure at a time when social division is stark as nothing more than an attempt to portray Brazil as one of the future economic powerhouses of the world by the current regime.

Just to cite all the disturbances on the matter of transport fare increases is not looking at the underlying social unrest that so ensures at the present time as it is just one of many facets of the current unrest.

I know there are underlying problems in Brazil, corruption going on and all that, but as was said on the news last night was that the rise in bus fares was the final straw
