I was at Sheffield the other day and thought about the toc that ran it, it was then I noticed that it had the least branding of any station I personally have been to.

I'm talkng about the station name signs of course and not posters.

Not having visited there before I thought at first that it was London Midland's signage but slightly different, then thought I was mad for thinking they served there.

Are there many other stations like this?

That's old Midland Mainline colours, still at Chesterfield and Kettering. EMT have a really slow scheme of replacing them with white background and navy type signs, such as at Derby, Matlock Bath and East Mids Parkway, but, as I say, they ain't got round to Sheffield yet.

Virgin Trains managed stations, such as Coventry and any north of Warrington BQ, still carry BR InterCity signs, and many stations on EMT's network still have old BR Regional Railways station signs, and Moorgate-Drayton Park on FCC is still in NSE colours!

Wow, would have thought in the 14 years since privatisation they would have gotten round to changing more of them.

I think that the Drayton Park - Moorgate station would look much worse in FCC colours. It must be noted that a map is on the far wall (behind the tracks if you're standing on the platform) showing the line to Moorgate at least on the southbound platform (don't know where the line goes to on the northbound platforms!) and it doesn't look very nice IMO.

Other places to spot NSE branding are car stop markers. The latest one I've seen is at Brookmans Park there are still NSE ones!

Virtually every sign at Thorpe Bay outside of the station is still in NSE style. The "pole" with the double arrow sign and the name on top (I don't know what to call it/them) is still in NSE, and the roundabout a short distance to the west has the same signs it had 15 years ago. Hence, not only are they NSE; they are so unclean that they are almost unreadable...

Is a lot of the NSE colour coding on that line done in the tiling? I guess changing it starts to get pretty expensive.

There's a good example of this at Southampton Central - the partition wall down the middle of the footbridge is done in a mosaic, and there's a hint of NSE about various bits of it. I should think it'll be there for a long time yet...

Yes, and FCC seem to want to spend as little money as possible on the stations down that branch...

...on a related note, have there ever been any 'stand behind the yellow line' announcements at H+I? See the picture below if you're wondering why I'm asking that!

Totem was something different under British Railways and for a time still around under BR. Never heard it called a totem pole since.
