Don't know if I'm in the right place here, but whilst browsing in Waterstones yesterday for presents for you know what, there were reprinted copies of Bradshaws for £10

Not bad if you are happy not to have an original

I managed to get one from WHSmith online for £4.99 a few months ago. Fascinating little read.

There are two versions floating about: an 1866 version, and an 1863 version, which I have and is the one used in the actual TV programme.

It's fun looking up places that you know and seeing what it says about them.

You can also get the Continental Guide now too, which I've just ordered from Amazon Warehouse Deals.

An aunt of mine works for the company that fills Garden Centres with books, mainly 'vanity tomes' but last month she rang me and practically screamed down the phone that she had a stock of Bradshaws in for Christmas.

They're proving to be very popular. Who would have thought that a forgotten 19th century guide book would set the book world alight in the 21st century.

You can get a Kindle version of the 1863 reproduction on Amazon for £3.71, however you can get the 1866 version, in 4 separate parts, for free, here: http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000075905

This is an option to download PDF versions.

The 1863 reproduction doesn't actually come with all the original maps and plans due the condition and size of the originals, and those that are included are not fold-out versions.

But apart from a few bells and whistles it's exactly the same, content wise, as the ordinary version isn't it? I mean still with no fold-out maps or anything?

One of the things I love about these old books it's looking at all the old advertisements. They're fascinating.

There appear to be an 1863 (old house) and 1966 Kindle versions the £3.71 & £3.31 (as of last night) both seem ok but the margins on the 1966 version is too narrow making the £3.71 version a much easier read. That's just from looking at the free samples - which is one of the great benefits of a Kindle

and I agree about the old adverts which make for quite a surreal experience on a Kindle.

I have the standard version; I've just been wondering if it was worth the upgrade. I don't think it is.

Wasn't there also an updated UK Bradshaws guide published after 1900? I seem to remember this being referred too in the Great British Railway Journeys series, as there are some towns included in the new guide that wern't built when the 1863 guide was produced.
