Hi everyone I don't fully understand the routing guide so here goes.

On Saturday I'll be leaving for Wrexham, and then staying overnight with family.

On the Sunday I plan to visit an old friend of mine who lives just outside Wigan.

The question I'm asking is how close will the routing guide let me to get Wigan with my Wrexham to Bradford return ticket so to cut down on cost?

Cheers and thanks for the help.

Eric

RG is here:

http://www.atoc.org/about-atoc/rail-settlement-plan/routeing-guide

Wrexham Group is a Routeing Point (RP)

Bradford Group is a Routeing Point (RP)

So it's easy; just look up the relevant maps :)

This page tell us that mapped routes are on the following maps:
CG+LY
CG+TP
CL+LY
CL+TP
GM+LY
GM+TP
LY+ML
ML+TP

The maps can be found here
.

If you get stuck, give us a shout (although it'll be tomorrow before I reply, someone else may reply sooner)

Cheers for the swift reply.

Have I got this right in that routes CG+LY both cover Wigan making it a valid route for the return journey to stop off there for break of journey until the evening?

I think that route is Warrington to Wigan to Earlestown to Manchester - and I don't think you can do that on a Sunday, as there is no direct service from Wigan to Earlestown.
(and only the 18:21 on weekdays).

That's the theory anyway, the practice may be quite different!

I don't mind paying from Warrington to Wigan mate.

I just wanted to cut down the cost.

No map CG allows travel from Wigan to Manchester via Bolton

So I should be ok going that way on the return and won't expect the guard to challenge me?

Eric

I had a look on Railplanner for you. With all 'settings' correct and 'via' left blank a journey came out from Bradford Interchange to Wrexham General via and changing at: Preston, Warrington Bank Quay and Chester. So to me its looks like a Bradford - Wrexham single or return ticket is valid via Wigan.

A year or two back my partner and I travelled home from Crewe via Chester, Northwich, Altrincham, Manchester Piccadilly (on Metrolink) and Huddersfield to Brighouse with the return half of a Crewe - Brighouse ticket. Reason being; we didn't want to faff about getting a bus to Wilmslow! We got on a train for Holyhead and got off at the first stop - Chester. We wondered if the conductor would question our route but he didn't. He stamped our tickets and simply said, "OK thanks." Personally, I don't think he knew where Brighouse was!!!

Cheers for the above mate.

I had an inkling at the back of my mind that my return journey from Wrexham to Bradford could be valid via Wigan on the return journey.

I'm guessing it's perfectly reasonable for me to break my return journey on the Sunday in Wigan for the afternoon to visit my friend?

Hi everyone,

Is the best way of splitting of tickets at Manchester?

You could split at Manchester (route Halifax) then Manchester CTLZ - Wigan. Then the £15.40 SVR from Wigan - Wrexham (via Warrington Bank Quay).
