There are a couple of automatic signals on the approach to Wigan Wallgate from Hindley (passing through Ince station) that appear to be under Warrington Power box jurisdiction. The distance is only very small and I was wondering why Wallgate box didn't control this section seeing that it's mostly Wallgate traffic that uses this particular stretch. I was wondering if anybody actually knows what the arrangements actually are on this line from Wigan Wallgate to Hindley Station (Crow Nest Junction box).
Is Crow Nest Junction in communication with Warrington Power Box as well as Wigan Wallgate? (I think it may well be if traffic was to cross over to North Western instead of going into Wallgate)

Crow Nest will be in communication with Warrington PSB as it is the fringe box to Warrington who in turn will be in communication with Wallgate signal box.

Warrington do signal the Hindley to Wallgate section (signals prefixed WN) and they will be in charge of either sending trains on to Wallgate box or across to North Western, which is under Warrington PSB control. I'm not overly familiar with Wallgate box but I can only guess it's limits are a throw back to it's limits as an Absolute block signal box before the power boxes were opened, it may have been easier at the time (1970s) to transfer the Hindley section over to Warrington when it opened rather than increase the size of Wallgates controlling area when whatever signal boxes were abolished around Hindley.

As a side note, Springs Branch Jn-Gerrards Bridge (St Helens) comes under Warrington PSB - signalled mostly on Automatics except for a few controlled signals around Ince Moss.

Thanks D9000 - The thought had occured to me about Wallgate's past history in terms of absolute block working and the proximity of the nearby WCML and its associated signalling system with WPSB. I bet it was much cheaper just to extend some more control to Warrington rather than upgrade the Wallgate box

Given that trains from Crow Nest Jn run right up onto the LNW lines (with connections to/from those lines) before dropping down to Wallgate, I'm hardly surprised that Warrington PSB controls that area. Although it'd be possible for Wallgate SB to fringe directly with Crow Nest, it'd lead to a very complicated fringe between Wallgate SB and Warrington PSB, with each box inevitably having slots on large numbers of the other's signals and all sorts of other controls.
