Bournemouth Station Query

Hi,

I am a beginner to all of this so this question maybe quite silly, but I live around the Bournemouth area so obviously most of my time trainspotting is in this area, however I never manage to see any freight (might be my timing), all i ever see are commuters such as 444/450, Do freight trains pass through Bournemouth Station? if not where is the best and closest station for seeing freight?

The only regular freight is a Wool - Neasden train, for which paths can be found on realtimetrains, although I'm not sure what days it normally tends to actually run. There used to be freight to Hamworthy Quay however these workings aren't running anymore.

Well i was originally planning on heading to Southampton as its a 30 minute journey, but I could eventually head out to both, thank-you all again! :)

Eastleigh would be the best, plenty of other enthusiasts there too at certain times of day.

There is engineering work between Bournemouth and wareham tomorrow (Sunday), no sure what, but bound to be something different.

The wool sand train changed contract from freight liner to gbrf earlier in the year and it does not seem to have run since, for months at least. So it is all 450/444, the odd 455 frm the branksome depot and the charter steam/ diesel specials which were summer weekly last year, but very few this year.

Canute road.... The place where trains and buses don't mix very well.....

That said trains and buses don't mix very well at any location.

Sadly much of SWT land is pretty dull these days :( Eastleigh is definitely a good shout though - can you still see anything from the road bordering the works, or is everything only visible from the railway side now?

Other than that, for a day out you could travel down to Dorchester South, walk over the road to Dorchy West and take a trip on FGW up to Westbury. Plenty of freight knocking about there usually, a good chance of some Colas locos plus the resident 08, good few rakes of stone wagons and NR tracklaying/ballast kit, and probably a
59 or two. Plus the stock on the Weymouth run varies greatly, any mix of 150/1, 150/2, 153 and 158 is possible.

I have spent the past twenty years producing and constantly updating
timetables for over 100 freight 'hotspots' around the country, including
Eastleigh and Westbury as recommended by others earlier in this topic,
plus some a bit further afield such as Reading(and Reading West), Didcot,
Basingstoke, etc.

There is normally a fee to subscribe, but as you are a "beginner",
I have sent you details by PM of a special 'free trial' I am currently
offering people who have never subscribed to FMonline before...

...so if anyone else reading this is interested in trying FMonline for free,
please send me a PM and you will be able to try out the timetables and realtime

FreightFan66 - usually the most exciting thing though Bournemouth station is a 455 on its way to the depot for paintwork, or a 458 for testing, tho I haven't personally seen one. As others have said, wander up to Eastleigh for more exciting events!

Wow! is the depot at Bournemouth or does it pass through Bournemouth? yes I plan too, im excited! :)

Trains on the down line for the depot run through Bournemouth station down to Branksome, then reverse direction into the depot. There's no direct entry from the Bournemouth end. Trains on the up line can run direct into the depot after Parkstone station. Trains from the depot can join the up or down lines.
