Bounds Green Depot Maintenance Tech Assessment Day

Hi there folks,

I have an invite to an assessment day for a Rolling Stock engineering role with VTEC at Bounds Green maintenance depot. I was wondering if anybody had any tips on how to best prepare for the day. Its an all day event with technical assessments and interview.

Just want to prepare the best I can.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You probably need to know about the company what rolling stock they use.
What’s involved with train maintenance etc.I assume the tests will be mechanical comprehension questions.

If you are new to the industry (or are currently in a different area) highlight your transferable skills. Be positive but realistic and honest.

Thanks for your advice guys. I'm coming from different industries - maintenance engineer on ships, submarines and heavy/precision manufacturing. Will definitely highlight my transferable skills and continue to research my new role.

Generalising here but....

Safety is always priority. Possible example of when you have used reporting procedures and used personal protection systems.
Demonstrate you can follow engineering procedures.
Understand what Safety Critical means.
Any issues you encounter, you report to team leaders / supervisors.
Importance of recording serial numbers and filling in paperwork etc
Usual COSHH stuff.
You may have to do a practical. Ie, fit two flanges together correctly with a torque wrench or demonstrate how to use a fluke.
