Apologies if there is a thread more appropriate for this. I notice in the Yorkshire Post that there's a bit of a buzz about the prospect of more mining at Boulby. Anyone know whether all that lot is still rail connected and whether we'll see mineral trains running from the area?

Boulby itself is most definitely still connected to the mainline I see the pot ash trains passing on my local line! Are you thinking of the new mine that is possibly being opened in the Whitby/Scarborough area? That at present isn't connected to the mainline but there is the possibility of reconnecting any mine by rebuilding part of the old Whitby - Scarborough railway with a connection to the Esk Valley Line at Whitby itself.

As far as I know, the single line that runs there from Saltburn is still connected. I've never been able to understand why the line curves around the cliff at Saltburn in such a scary way. Does anybody know the history behind this?

Freightliner still has the contract, the last I heard about it. Still approx 2 trains per day in each direction from Boulby to Middlesbrough.

Think Tata Steel are trying to shut Skinningrove plant so the potash will be the only freight on the branch if this does happen.
