The OP has posted their version of events, and the letter received from GWR. They have answered additional questions. Advice has been provided on that basis. There is little to be gained from questioning the veracity of the OPs story. This is an internet forum, not a legal practice, and the information exchanged on both sides should be used in that context.

Second guessing and hypothesising serve little purpose and add nothing to the conversation, other than unnecessary noise in the thread.

Quite right, if the information I've provided is inaccurate it will only do me harm. You lot are doing a stand up job giving out advice and guidance but it isn't legal council or meant to be so everything you're doing should be in that light!

Bastillefallof was there anything about your actions that day which might have given the mistaken impression that you were attempting to leave the station without buying a ticket? I ask this as it could be the basis for GWR's action and it would be useful for you to know beforehand what reason they might have for pursuing the matter.

IF I was making my way for the exit then I would understand wanting to pursue the matter. As I queued for the ticket machine and then the ticket booth - in view of cctv and other staff members then there was clearly no attempt by myself to leave the station without paying.

Thankyou for all for your advice in this forum. I will be doing as many of you have suggested and appealing with the facts, basically what Puffing Devil said along with quoting the relevant bylaws and GWR own guidelines on their site.

I will post again once I've had a response.
