Bought a single instead of a return

I suspect I know the answer; but I inadvertently bought a single from Littleport to Kings Cross instead of a return

Given how similar the price is, I didn’t twig until it was too late

Short of paying for a separate single to get back, do I have any options?

If the ticket is for tomorrow or later, and if it’s the right sort of ticket, you can get it cancelled and refunded, then go and buy the right ticket.

You don’t give the necessary details, but I suspect this probably won’t be the case.

Is it possible to get it excessed? That was a routine way to alter tickets years ago.

Take it to a booking office before you start travel and ask for an excess fare.

If you are travelling already, go to the ticket office at King's Cross immediately on arrival and there's a fair chance they will excess it there and then. If you are not travelling yet get it done before you get on a train.

If you are already travelling you're probably out of luck, but if not or you've only just boarded, you could try breaking your journey at Ely or Cambridge and asking the ticket office for an excess there. I think that would be your best bet. Cambridge are particularly knowledgable. Obviously Littleport is unstaffed.

Worth a shot on arrival at the LNER ticket office at Kings Cross, but there's no way to tell if a paper ticket hasn't been picked up from the barrier or the ground, or an e-ticket passed from a friend who no longer needs it, and everything I have read on this and seen quoted from internal guidance, is that you cannot excess a ticket that has been fully used.

I’m writing from the perspective of having worked there and issued such excesses many times in the past. The scenario you describe is highly unlikely.

Indeed, but is it not true that regardless of that, at least under current guidance, once fully used a ticket should not technically be excessed?

I can try again on the way back if it’s open I guess
I'm afraid that you won't have any luck at that stage. When I worked there we only ever did the single to return excess when it was immediately after arrival from the station where the ticket had been bought. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Yes, although whether a ticket that has been used as far as King's Cross is fully used is debatable as it has onward validity to Moorgate. Not that we ever bothered with considering that.

Very true in this case. And for what it's worth, glad to hear that you did it for people!

I’m happy to say you were incorrect

When do you travel, if you haven't already?

Uber support also said no
If you'd already travelled at that point, then that's correct to say they can't do anything.

If you'd not travelled, and it's an e-ticket or uncollected TOD ticket, then I would have thought our ticketing website would have done that (but I'd have to ask the people in charge to check, I would have been happy to ask on your behalf and do my best to see if it could have been done).

Tried at the LNER office. The lady didn’t know what it meant to excess a ticket
If this was before travel, this is poor. Not at all unexpected from an average ticket office, though LNER tend to be well above the average.

I selected single by mistake, but was incorrectly given an Anytime Single. The price was close enough I didn’t twig

Aiming from the 21:48

It was immediately after arrival on the out leg. I appreciate she could refuse, but she literally didn’t understand

I'm happy that I was, but still surprised.

Incorrectly? As you selected a single, it was the only possible option.
It’s eligible for an Off Peak Day Return, so I’m unclear why it wouldn’t be eligible for an Off Peak Single?

I don't use Uber, as I've heard the customer support can be very poor, but would you like to go through the booking process again, and show screenshots?

Does the forum site offer it?

The existence of an Off Peak Day Return doesn't mean that an Off Peak (Day) Single will also exist. Littleport to London Terminals is a good example of this, where there is only the Anytime Single, so you haven't been 'done'.

That’s really strange, I had no idea

Screenshots taking the same times but next week to illustrate:

If she didn't understand the phrase "excess a ticket", you could ask to hand in the single, exchange it for a return and pay the fare difference.
That would be even more confusing because that can't be done.

I find the Avanti app sometimes presents a single as the ‘best’ option (ie it takes up the top spot and occupies most of the screen), even when searching for a return. It has caught me out more than once when buying in a rush whilst already en-route to the station, given the price difference is negligible. Costly mistake to make when buying an Anytime First ticket!

I made the same mistake today when the Uber iOS app decided to update at exactly the wrong moment and having to hurriedly use their website

Interesting experience - LNER man said “it not possible” then said “try over the road”

A very friendly guy at St Pancras did indeed excess both parts of my split singles for me

Which seems to imply LNER have a policy of … not helping/not excessing/not altering already used tickets/not offering to help people save money … which he was unwilling to breach, but was willing to help me indirectly.

How soon did you realise? With some retailers (including Trainsplit, which the forum's site uses), if you accidentally book a Single and realise promptly that you needed a return, you could have cancelled online and re-booked. Does Uber allow that functionality?

The staff member was probably reluctant because they are not compelled to issue it, and they would see it as time consuming. Saying it is "not possible" is wrong, though some staff take the view that if they don't know how to do it, the default response is to claim it's not possible as it's easier than looking it up.

That said, I am sure some LNER ticket office staff would have done it.

Before I entered the barrier at Ely

But I had two minutes to open the barrier and get to platform 2, so I didn’t have any scope to fix it unless I stepped back
Oh, so the excess was done after travel? In that case, LNER were correct to refuse it; the excess is only possible if the ticket hasn't expired.

So it was lucky that EMR were lenient!

True. But until a couple of weeks ago, I could have bought a return, used it, and then refunded the original single whilst on the train

I was in a position where due to a minor mistake, no matter what I did, I would pay double unless I found someone in a sufficiently good mood
