Afternoon!

This weekend, I'm looking at travelling from Boston, to Bedford on Saturday but breaking my journey in Burton-on-Trent, then travelling back from Bedford to Boston on Sunday.

Individual returns are £13 (Boston - Nottingham OPR), £5.55 (Nottingham - Burton OPDR) and £19.35 (Nottingham - Bedford OPR), with my YP railcard.

East Coast's engine allows me to put in Nottingham - Bedford via Burton, giving me a route of Nottingham - Burton - Derby - Leicester or East Mids Parkway - Bedford. I assume this means this would indeed be valid, saving me the £5.55 Nottingham - Burton Off Peak Day Return fare, giving me a total of £32.35.

It doesn't, however, allow Boston - Bedford via Burton.

Can I go any cheaper?

I may not be reading your post correctly, but going Nottingham-Burton-Derby involves doubling back over the same route, so I don't think that's valid. I can't vouch for East Coasts website and I don't have the routing guide to hand I'm afraid. As you're using two seperate tickets on the section you are doubling back on, it may be valid, whereas I'm certain it would not be valid on the through ticket.

Don't forget to check out the various Rangers / Rovers that are valid - They may be more suitable (and cheaper) They are now on the National rail web site giving the area of validity and cost.

The East Coast website can certainly be interesting when it comes to routeing. Get reservations!

It's difficult getting reservations, as I want to break my journey on the outward leg.

I'll list the trains I'll be wanting to catch:

Saturday
Boston 1050 - Nottingham 1223
Nottingham 1237 - Burton 1319
Burton 1751 - Derby 1805
Derby 1818 - EMD 1831
EMD1840 - Bedford 1946

Sunday
Bedford 1050 - Nottingham 1218
Nottingham 1621 or Netherfield 1627 - Boston 1801

Looking up on the Routeing Guide, Boston (routeing point Sleaford) to Bedford uses map EM. This shows, as far as I can see, that this allows me to go Boston - Nottingham - Derby - Leicester - Bedford. I could then add in the Derby - Burton OPDR, to get my to Burton from Derby and back, to resume my journey to Bedford.

the codes are actually SVR and CDR, respectively. this refers to the original non-simple names.
