I'm travelling air/rail through Bordeaux in June, so I have been checking the public transport options between the airport and St Jean station.
Currently there's a direct airport bus, non-stop to St Jean taking 30 minutes, costing €8. Frequency varies but is typically every 30-40 minutes. https://30direct.com/schedules/
There's also TBM bus #1, also direct to Gare St Jean, which takes 70 minutes and runs every 7-10 minutes. It's part of the city fare system so the fare is €1.70 (€5 for a network day ticket).
You can change from the #1 bus to Tram A in Merignac for a faster journey (50 min), but tram A doesn't serve St Jean directly, so you need to change to tram C or D at Porte de Bourgogne for the last lap along the river.
HOWEVER: Tram A is extended from Merignac on a new line direct to the airport from 1200 on April 29, on a 10-minute frequency, and a journey time of 35m.
So that will be cheap and frequent, though with the change to tram C/D to reach St Jean.

A couple of extra points from the reporting:
TBM bus #1 from Bordeaux St Jean will terminate at Merignac from May 2, making tram A the main city access to the airport.
It is intended that infrastructure changes in the city centre will allow direct trams from the airport to Gare St Jean, but that is scheduled for 2025.
The express bus, which is funded by the Region rather than the city, will continue.
