Booking Other trains

I recently travelled from Guildford to OXford with a bike and wanted a reservation for it. Now fo most of the day, the first trains to leave Reading after the Guildford train arrives is a Voyager. But for this journey there was an HST to also going to Oxford five minutes after the Voyager, which I obviously wanted to get.
Not knowing the situation a la bikes on this HST (whether there might be six on already?) I wanted to book a reservation for it online, for telesales had closed for the night.
This was a very difficult encounter and after lots of attempts at many diffewrent things, I failed. Therefore I decide to split at Reading for an extra 10p and got my HST booking (which I didn't use in the end because it was cancelled, but the voyager was ok in the end.)

Sorry for the long post, but my ultimate question is, was there any way to make a booking website (preferably East Coast) book a train that s not the first one to leave an interchange station as in my case?

"Via Didcot" or "Avoid Didcot" might work, but only if one train is stopping there and the other isn't.

I believe if you use the "text only" version of the website there will be the opportunity to increase the available connection time at interchange stations.
