With the introduction of Oyster PAYG, and general cost-cutting measures, is it the correct thing to do to cut staffing at stations?

No, people like to speak to a person for assistance if required, not to mention the security of knowing someone is around if needed for various reasons.

No if anything they should allow Oyster to be topped up at all stations it is valid from the office or ticket machine, no idea why they didnt allow it. At SWT stations you cant even top up from machine.

What about people starting in London travelling outside of Greater London? I imagine a lot of people arriving in London by train following the volcanic ash disruption would need some advice about the best way to get to their final destination which a ticket machine can't give.

Do you mean all stations or all stations within the Oyster area? If it's the former I think that would confuse station staff in other parts of the country.

All stations in oyster area, im sure few people wish to top up their oyster (should they have one) in say, Thurso.

At the moment, the technology available is limited to LUL stations, London based newsagents...never mind the mainline stations accepting Oyster,

Not a good move in my book to permit Oyster to be used on mainline services within the London zones area then restrict users to only being able to top up at certain places.

So as far as the OP is going, I think LOROL has the right idea in staffing from the first train to the last train and booking office cutbacks aren't always the best idea.
