Has anyone got any experience of writing and/or publishing railway books?

Was kind of experience was it (positive/negative/worthwhile)?

Can anyone offer any advice on this subject or point me in the direction of a good online resource?

Any useful information relating to the writing, copyrights, publishing options, sourcing and referencing information, identifying potential markets, and common pitfalls is more than welcome. Are there any practical considerations one must take into account BEFORE I collect information and resources?

I have written about 32 books on railways, contributed to railway encyclopedia, university books, written dozens of magazine articles. My drive was - I was interested in my subject. I never went into it for money, well, not primarily, which was just as well, given the financial result. But nothing stopped me writing. I wanted to write on the subject. So thats my advice - if you are interested get a letter off to a railway publisher explaining what you want to write about and why and then, collect your research and write the book.

Along with two of my colleagues we recently completed a book for the 40th anniversary of Sheffield PSB opening, we looked at the 60 boxes closed as a result of this. It was a fascinating excercise and really enjoyed it, its certainly a great feeling when you get a copy of the completed book.
