• Singer Bonnie Tyler, known for hits including Total Eclipse of the Heart, has died at the age of 75

• A statement on her website says she died unexpectedly last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.

• In May, the south Wales-born singer was placed into an induced coma after emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal

• Last month, her spokesperson said she was out of the coma but remained very unwell and in intensive care.

Just heard the news on the radio. Her music was a big part of my childhood soundtrack and she'll be missed.

That’s the thing, I never did get to see her. A few years back she was doing a support slot (forget who for now), it was the same night as another show elsewhere that I’d already booked. The main act she was opening for then had to cancel but the venue kept her slot open and turned it into her own headline show. Whereas had the whole thing been rearranged I would probably have tried to get a ticket.

Ironically, on Wednesday I was out for a walk with a friend and we passed a poster that listed her as headline act for one day of the Summer's End Angus festival, and I mentioned that I wouldn't mind going to see her performance.

Young Chariot was sent off to a time-warp of a French village in 1983, to "learn French" (according to my dear parents) for a month; I'd not even reached my 13th birthday.
Total Eclipse of the Heart was one of two UK singles owned by my French family; and my "connection home" was by my playing it many, many times.
I hope she's now with Tina Turner, banging 'em out together.
