Here's a question... A long time ago I posted about 37214, the parts donor at the B&KR, asking about her future, which is obviously inevitable at this point. Never been clear on her backstory, though.

What on earth happened to her?! She seems to have had a very typical 37 life. Stored unserviceable in the late 90s under Transrail, inherited by EWS who put her up for sale.

She was then acquired by West Coast which looks like great news, she's safe! She runs around a bit for a year ish, doing your average WCRC 37 things, a few galas, her final workings seeming to be the Royal Scotsman (open for someone to correct me if I'm wrong there?). Then, according to some pictures accompanied with descriptions I found on Flickr, she failed at some point thereafter, was sidelined at Carnforth and... died. Left rotting in the corner until the Scottish 37 Group picked her up and started stripping her for parts to keep their tractors in good nick, after having sat as a forgotten maroon lump at Carnforth for over a decade.

What a travesty. Her heritage career cut short before its time. What failure was so catastrophic that WCRC just gave up, and yet left her traction motors, bogies and 12CSVT in good enough condition for the 37 Group to use on 025, 261 and 403? I'm always sad to see her, it feels like such a waste. They recently painted over the peeling maroon with BR Blue as what amounts to busywork for probably some of the younger/more junior volunteers with extra paint from 025's refurbishment. It feels morbid to me...

Not blaming the SRPS/37 Group for using her as a parts donor though. Her bodywork was absolutely, thoroughly knacked after having sat at Carnforth for all that time, it would seem. More frustrated with West Coast.

Former Preserved Tractor 37214 is seen here through the trees stored outside the Depot at Carnforth. The former D6914 suffered an Engine Failure early in it's WCRC career and is now a source of spares at Carnforth.

Ouch. Thought the engine had been pulled and used for spares but I'm probably misremembering - might've been confused with either the 403 engine lift video or 261's engine which did sit outside for a period. Tragic. Or maybe not, if you look at it from the viewpoint of the tractor being entirely intact when relegated to a parts donor, minus the engine. I doubt there are many 37 parts floating around in as good condition as what will have come out of 214 over the years. Most 37s were either scrapped outright for metals when EWS got rid of them or were already in good enough nick not to part out. Not many like 214 was. Thanks for the source.

Got a holiday coming up and will be, ironically, at the K&WVR on the Sunday, so driving hundreds of miles to a heritage railway without an event when I could be going to the one half an hour up the road for the biggest event of the year However will be there for the Saturday. 60163 will be great to see - is 025 only running on the Sunday or the Saturday too?

This is a great relief, even if some of it was lost, at least we now know that they're not leaving social media forever and we'll still have some content. I did manage to recover the first run of 37025 in preservation under her own power using archival tools as I believe it to be historically important. I'll need to see if they restored this too.

Edit: Confirmed it was restored, all's well that ends well.

And now for something completely different!

I had been told by the tour guide that took me around the sheds in August that their Gresley-era teak carriages were constructed of teak found in a shipwreck. Apparently the teak trade is so tightly regulated that it was impossible for the SRPS to acquire any, especially in significant volumes for the restoration of these carriages, but there was a shipwreck located with a huge amount of teak in the hold. The teak was auctioned off and the SRPS bought enough to repair all their teak rolling stock.

I accepted this unquestioningly at the time, but on reflection it sounds rather far fetched. I did a cursory search, as an event like that sounds like it would be pretty well reported, even outside SRPS affiliated media. An old shipwreck full of extremely valuable timber that was so durable it was still in workable condition after spending time at the bottom of the sea sounds like a great headline... but nothing. Was it true? Does anyone know anything about it? I suppose that it could've been in the 80s or 90s and simply wasn't reported on digitally, the guide didn't give me any sort of timeframe, it could've been a project that was ongoing for 30+ years for all I know.

Ah, thank you! What a story. Apparently the teak was submerged in silt and remained basically perfect. Pretty good luck

from what i can find teak logs from the wreck of the SS Pegu have been recovered by the MoD for Cutty Sark and HMS Victory, with the SRPS and the London and North Eastern Coach Association purchasing some. It would have been used on 1002 and would have been purchased in 2012

That teak was mostly used on buffet 644, 1002 used a lot of original panels plus some from scrapped coaches.
