If it can't be done on the move, won't pax be unhappy to have their Journey times made around 5 minutes longer? Also I'm not sure FCC will be happy if every EMT train calls at Bedford...

Why should the train stop to switch from overhead to diesel? Isn't it just a matter of turning the diesel engines on and putting the pantograph down?

So that is a minimum of say 200 miles per diagram per day under the wires which could in theory be removed. Call it 20 (Meridan) diagrams - 4000 miles per day under the wires.
It certainly adds up.

In support of ukrob's post above, I'm pretty sure (though I may be totally wrong) that the Electrostars have to stop in order to switch over, and I'd imagine that if the 22x class used the same train management system, they too would have to stop.
You're entirely correct - they often break completely during the changeover too. Another example of high quality Derby engineering.

High Speed One has much higher tension in the wires than the rest of the domestic OHLE so tends to be a bit of a special case. I seem to recall someone on here (might have been OT or OLL) saying that if you raised the panto on the move it would quite possibly cause a de-wirement on most OHLE.
