A sad day, I may have disagreed with him an awful lot but he was still a hell of a union leader and fought very hard for his members.

Incredibly saddening news, and my thoughts are with his family.
Cue the disgusting comments, not so much on here but on Twitter etc.
It was okay to disagree with him and what he stood for, as well as what he said and did, but I just know that we're going to have loads of people celebrating this (just as sick people celebrated the death of Margaret Thatcher).

I imagine it was sudden, I hadn't heard of any illness or health condition.
Sad news, his life has been cut short at a young age by modern standards. Whether you agree with his views or not, it is a shame when that happens.

As a human being, I feel really sorry for his family and friends. My condolences are with them.
But as a public transport passenger, I have to say good riddance.
This man cared not one jot for the passengers and the taxpayers.
He was selfish, snobbish and deeply arrogant, and viewed us passengers as a massive inconvenience, and bullied his way around with deeply unreasonable demands for rail workers.
Again, I am sorry for his family, and wish no one ill or dead, but as a passenger and taxpayer, I accept the reality of the situation that we are better off without him at the helm of the union.

I was no fan either, but to die at 52 which the same age as me is very sad

Absolutely couldnt stand the man, but its sad none the less and 52 is no age to go.
As has been said, and is always the case no matter what, the people he has left behind will feel it the most.
I didn't agree with him on many points, but he was a champion of his members and their interests. 52 is no age, and my sympathies go out to his family and friends - RIP.
I actually had him appear at my ticket office a couple of times, and sold him tickets - though I must admit I didn't realise it was him the first time, until it was pointed out to me by a colleague!

That was the cause I expected on the suddenness of his death

As a 52 year old as well this is a shock.
Yes didn't agree with a lot of what he did but if you can judge a man by his enemies...
I am sure by now the likes of Stagecoach and First would have thought they should have been able to reduce their Rail Employees to the same low conditions as their Bus workers but by and large they haven't been able to do so, perhaps Union resistance has had something to do with this?
