I've paid for sponsorships on other forums before (like $15 or something). The forum I run is probably about half as active as this site and we survive purely off donations, with some spare cash in the kitty even after that. Something to think about if it's really a problem.

From what's been said by the mods the forum more than covers it's costs through the Google ads that appear on the forum. Whenever donations have been suggested by the membership they've always turned it down quite quickly.

You could get 1 of the admins to do a bit of jiggery-pokery in the admincp and make it a private group where people have to apply to join. That way, people get a place to build and imaginary 16 track HS line from Cowdenbeath to Morpeth and the 750m triple deck trains that go with it. It also keeps it off the main forum, so the casual visitor doesn't see it and gets scared away ....

Trouble is a lot of the 'fantasy railway' discussions are disproportionately contributed to or started by less informed or younger members of the forum, so by making the 'fantasy railways' sub forum a private group the 'NR General Discussion' forum will seem more like an 'old boys club' than the rest of the forum.

I think he made it clear what sort of threads would be deleted - I don't think a serious fantasy thread would be one.

I'm not entirely sure if it is an oxymoron - half of the fantasy on here actually has some substance!

If there was a fantasy board it could make use of topic icons. My forum uses them to show whether support topics are open or closed:

There could be say, five, like defcon levels, and would show the practicality and perhaps the thought and effort put into the thread.

Level : description
5 : a serious proposal from an industry guy who knows their stuff
4 : a serious proposal, well lain out, with images or diagrams
3 : could be done, but would cost a lot of money
2 : would like to see, but would involve demolitions or difficult terrain
1 : would like to see... but never, ever gonna happen

I mean they're just prospective of course, but something like that.


Perhaps, though such a thing isn't for RailUK... and a completely new board would be better? If RailUK didn't want it someone else could set it up.

One potential issue with that idea is that I can see it being filled up with stupid proposals anyway, and it would need a disproportionate amount of moderation.

Some of the current threads get filled up with daft proposals pretty quickly. The difference is that at the moment they get in the way of the serious posts. If there was a separate "wishlist" subforum for ideas then we could separate the fantasy from the realistic.

I'm not sure why it'd need any more moderation, as long as people were posting in the right area. Think of it as an "overspill" area

I do support the notion of such ana rea, but as I indicated before we never got anywhere with it before. I think having a Private Forum for it could work, but with mentions such as this it wouldn't be all that private or little-known...
